Issue 011

Thursday, July 9, 2020

It's Thursday, 7/9. This is the eleventh issue of plus450, a personal motivator for me to stay creative and hungry during these trying times.

A few words.

First and foremost, I feel an apology is in order. This small audience I have built, which includes you, has been neglected over the last few weeks. I hope to reimagine what these emails look and feel like and I've been dealing with a sort of reckoning in recent days.

When I started all this, while the world was under an immense amount of pressure and anxiety, dealing with the ramifications of COVID-19 and the loss of so many, society also seemed more united than ever. Compounded by the common threat of sickness, we found ways to laugh, be creative, and reinvent the ways we live. It seemed like everyone, somewhere, was doing something new, because they could—and that was inspiring.

But all that glitters is not gold. We saw a righteous uprising across the United States and the world: an overdue response to subversive racism that had boiled over. The U.S. election draws nearer and nearer and has inevitably begun to infect daily conversations and splinter society into a hostile dichotomy. And as we are now amidst full-blown Summer, with temperatures as I write this near 90ºF, tensions seem to have risen between those that will not sacrifice their "fun in the sun" for a little virus, and those that are still weary of COVID and can no longer socially distance on the sidewalk. Of course everyone was willing to stay indoors in perhaps the least interesting part of the year: March–April (I say we make it a tradition), but we should have expected people to disregard safety and take more risks as warmer weather hit.

What I'm getting at is: Things have evolved. Many of us may be going back into work now or soon (myself included by the end of the Summer). Even as my WFH schedule changes and the title of this newsletter becomes defunct, I still hope to deliver regular goodness in design, and I hope you're up for it. I also hope you will bear with me and help me continue to develop this platform as something beneficial for all involved.

A redesigned personal brand.

If you follow me on social media, you are likely already tired of me promoting this, but I'll give it just one bump here. I recently disassembled and reimagined my personal brand identity, which had grown cobwebs since my undergrad days. I also built a new website

My design ethos has changed drastically over the last year; I now believe that design has a broader definition and purpose, one that should not be hindered by formalism nor limited to traditional medium. I used this newfound perspective to "start from scratch", ditching the 'cropmark' logo I had used in variations since high school and adopting a more nimble and less orchestrated visual language.

My new personal brand identity should express an MO and methodology rather than a visual aesthetic, and that is what I have tried to do.

I also have a couple shirts on sale onsite. They're pretty nonspecific and 100% of the profits are being donated to the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund.

Some visual stimuli.

A postcard campaign.

Thanks to a tip from my girlfriend, I'm designing and writing postcards to potential voters in key counties. *This is not a political ploy, but if this sounds interesting to you, it's a fun and easy way to get involved!
