Issue 007

Friday, May 8, 2020

It's Saturday, 5/8. This is the seventh (wow) issue of plus450, a personal motivator for me to stay creative and hungry during these trying times.

A few words.

I baked cookies for probably the third time in the last two months. Considering that's normally an endeavor I'd commit to maybe just once or twice a year, I'd say my cooking routines have been thoroughly shooketh. Here's the recipe I've been using, by the way—there's no alternative to making them from scratch.

I brought a few downstairs to my landlord and his family. We have a wonderful relationship, the benefits of which include traditional Greek dishes being shared with us. Last week they introduced us to moussaka, and all I can say is "wow".

New things coming out of my kitchen include homemade hummus, sushi, and turkey sausage, egg, and cheese's on biscuits. I'm not sure I'll go as far to say I'm trying to replicate what I was eating out before quarantine began, but there's definitely been a desire for, and more willingness to create, the types of dishes I had previously only had in restaurants. And, if you're looking for some knowledge on sustainable cookware, check this out.

In addition to new foods has been a transformation of my grocery sourcing. My local food market in Astoria was claustrophobic even before we were worried about COVID, so it's been a journey to test and discover new ways of shopping. I've visited farmers markets more than before (which have ben surprisingly well coordinated and socially distanced.) and now I'm choosing to purchase a lot more from local farmers and sources like meat, hard cider, eggs, and even hand sanitizer made by a local distillery. And yes, I've caved into the Instacart craze, making sure to adequately tip my shoppers, whom so far have been extremely friendly.

And lastly, bought myself an early birthday present: a new coffee bean grinder. I chose the Breville Smart Grinder Pro after researching for months, and damn—it's been a massive improvement. You cannot overstate the importance of grind quality.

Some visual stimuli.
