👋 Good morning! Last year, we announced that The Yappie would take steps to strengthen our coverage of Asian American + Pacific Islander politics and transition to focusing on long-term projects. Today, we’re excited to share some quick updates on what our all-volunteer team has been tackling over the past few months.
  • 🏆 In January, The Yappie was named a semi-finalist in President’s Innovation Challenge at Harvard University. As part of the competition, we were accepted into the Harvard Innovation Labs’ Spring Venture Program and are now competing for a grand prize of up to $75,000, which we hope to use to bolster our original reporting of AAPI issues.

  • ✍️ The Yappie’s Andrew Peng, Javan Santos, and Mary Yang recently wrapped up a feature story for the Harvard Asian American Policy Review focused on efforts to advance data disaggregation. We expect the piece will be published in the coming months (more soon) and want to thank Sarah Lin and Zizhan Luo for the opportunity.

  • 🎉 On Thursday, The Yappie was awarded $10,000 as a winner of the 2022 Next Challenge for Media & Journalism, supported by American Public Media Group's Glen Nelson Center. We will use this grant to compensate our contributors and expand our work on topics already familiar to longtime readers, such as digital disinformation.

  • 🗳️ The Yappie is also one of ten newsrooms launching reporting projects as part of the Solutions Journalism Network’s Advancing Democracy initiative. In collaboration with our friends and partners at Self Evident and AZI, our team is currently producing several in-depth stories focused on how AAPI communities are tackling barriers to American democracy, which will roll out by May 2022.

  • ❤️ Finally, we’re revamping our newsletters and looking to expand our team! If you're a passionate student or recent graduate with experience in reporting, design, grants, communications, and outreach, apply to join here. We may be able to provide compensation based on grant funding.
We remain 100% volunteer-run and funded by generous readers like you, and we’re grateful for your continued support. Aside from donating to The Yappie, we hope you’ll consider sharing our newsletters, providing feedback, and sending tips to
We’d love to hear from you, and we’ll have additional news to share soon (including on how to make tax-deductible donations). Stay well!
