MPP Report ~ August 2019 Issue

It has been a wonderful summer -- glorious weather, plenty of community events, and so many recreational sports and attractions throughout Kanata and West Carleton. I hope you have enjoyed all this summer has offered.

I had a good time attending our community events. Below you will see some photos of the charity barbeques and neighbourhood fun days. I apologize in advance for not being able to profile all the events I got out to – but I want to thank the volunteers at each for showing me a good time. Thank you.

I want to take this opportunity to mention that if I can assist with your provincial government needs, please contact my staff at the Community Office. Do you need help with your health card, driver’s licence, Ontario photo card, birth certificate, name changes, or marriage certificate? Would someone you know like to receive a birthday, milestone anniversary, or congratulatory certificate? Contact my office (phone and email below). We are pleased to serve you.

Have a great Labour Day holiday weekend and I wish you the best as we head into the Fall season,

IMPORTANT DEADLINE APPROACHING: Residents impacted by the flood have until September 4th to apply for assistance through the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians (DRAO) program. Throughout August my staff delivered directly to households detailed news of the announcement of Ontario's Special Advisor and the on-going provincial support for residents impacted by the flood. Click here for more information: Provincial Government Assistance.

Information regarding the Ontario Government’s new education reform plan has been updated with specific data on Ottawa schools. You will be interested to know that the provincial funding increased to local school boards this year - and Ottawa's school boards are hiring teachers. Read more about how the Government's education reform will bring about measured changes to the public education system while keeping the best interests of Ontario students top of mind: The Ontario Government's Public Education Changes As They Relate To Students and Schools in Kanata-Carleton.

I was pleased to hear from almost 30 delegations at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) annual conference hosted here in Ottawa earlier this month. I held sessions with elected representatives and organizations from across the Province and met with many Ottawa area delegations. One such meeting was with the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (photo above) to discuss issues in the region’s rural municipalities. I also met with the City of Ottawa delegation (photo below) led by Mayor Jim Watson.  Read my reflections and view photos from the conference by clicking here.
In late July, I was pleased to host a Kanata-Carleton Seniors Roundtable held at my Community Office where we had a good exchange on local issues facing seniors. I appreciated hearing the various perspectives on matters relating to health care, local medical services and public transit.
It was a pleasure to meet with representatives from Epilepsy Ottawa and to learn details of the services and support the organization provides to individuals in our community. Thank you for taking time to meet with me.

Contact my office staff if you wish to arrange a meeting at my Community Office - or to have me visit your place of business.
Earlier this month I was pleased to catch up with August Guo at the Carp Foodliner, The store has a new location in downtown Carp. I was very pleased to see a feature article about the convenience store in one of our local community news sources, West Carleton Online. Read: New location, new challenge, new hope.
It was a pleasure to meet vendors at the Kanata Farmer’s Market. Great to see local businesses, producers, and products at the market. Please shop local and support our community.
Congratulations to the many wonderful volunteers with the Trailwest Community Association. They organized and hosted a great SummerFest this year at Kanata South's Kristina Kiss Park. It was a fun day of food and activities and it was good to see so many people out enjoying the day.

Contact my office if you wish for me to participate in a community event. I would love to attend if I can work it into my schedule.
This summer in our community there have been many fundraising BBQs for great causes. For example, here is Kanata's TownePlace Suites Marriott who held a charity BBQ for CHEO Hospital. It is wonderful to see such community spirit and I was very pleased to drop by and talk with the volunteers.
Here I am with Kanata South City Councillor Allan Hubley at the Bridlewood Community Church for Love Kanata! Free car wash, BBQ, and family fun day. Again, it is wonderful to see such great community spirit and the good attendance at our local community events! A special thanks to all the volunteers who make these community events happen.
If you have not yet heard about my Kanata-Carleton Community Volunteer Initiative, you can learn more here: MPP Releases Community Volunteer Initiative. Each week on social media I profile a feature organization as part of this initiative. Through the summer months, the following volunteer groups were profiled:
Kanata Theatre / Kanata Minor Hockey Association / Constance Bay Community Market / West Carleton Food Access Centre / Kanata Food Cupboard / Queensway Carleton Hospital / The Carp Fair
