MPP Report ~ February 2020 Issue

This MPP Report has a mix of news regarding business tours, constituency meetings, and a variety of events I attended throughout Kanata-Carleton this past month. We have a dynamic community and it is always a pleasure to take part in local association events and meet with local businesses to discuss work and future plans.

A few weeks ago I announced heritage grants for three local organizations in West Carleton. One of the fund recipients was the Diefenbunker; I am always fascinated by this historical site. The above photo is from a memorable meeting I had with executive director Christine McGuire. Read more here about the Provincial Government's funding support of our local history and culture.

I toured M CON Products Inc and Ottawa Valley Grain Products this month. M CON Products (photo above) is a manufacturer of sustainable precast concrete infrastructure located in Carp. While visiting this facility, I received an excellent brief from The Canadian Concrete Pipe and Precast Association apprising me of the industry news throughout Ontario.

Below is a photo touring the West Carleton facilities of Ottawa Valley Grain Products with owner and operator Kevin Stewart. Thank you for such an informative meeting.

I appreciated the thorough discussions at the Ottawa Hospital with CEO Jack Kitts and incoming CEO Cameron Love. I would like to thank all the dedicated, talented, and compassionate people who care for patients every day at the many heath institutions across Ottawa.

On Bell Let’s Talk Day in early February, I joined local MPPs to take part in informative sessions with the Canadian Mental Health Association Ottawa, and also to visit with physicians and patients at the Royal Mental Health Centre. Our community is so fortunate to have such caring mental health services and dedicated medical professionals.

It was my pleasure to help celebrate the 11th Annual All Seniors Care Seniors Games at The Courtyards on Eagleson Retirement Residence in Kanata. I am happy to have been invited back again this year for the games. This year's theme was “Traditions.” It is traditions that help serve as a grounding force for many – and are a source of many of life’s memories!

I had a very good meeting with an incredible group of young leaders from the national group 4MyCanada - https://www.4mycanada.com. This group is a movement of Canadians committed to working to make Canada strong for generations to come. We discussed a wide range of issues, including health care and long-term care. I thought our exchange of how to work together to educate Ontarians in a positive manner on current economic and social conditions was very productive.

This month I met with Jen Stewart, Chair of the Carp BIA, to discuss news and developments in the local West Carleton business scene. The Visitor's Guide is very attractive and kudos to the local BIA, which is active in promoting Carp and area businesses.

I was very pleased to attend the Forever Green Gala fundraiser held by Kanata Greenspace Protection Coalition – committed to ensuring our Kanata neighbourhoods maintain their natural beauty. The gala evening was a great success raising $130,000 towards its plans. I had a chance to talk with Sir Terrence Matthews about the importance of Kanata's green space, and I will continue to work with community leaders in its defence.

I was honoured to be with my friend Dr. Roly Armitage at his 95th birthday celebrations at the Legion in Constance Bay. It was a great afternoon and a wonderful event to see friends, neighbours, and family sharing this day with such an amazing person.

I made some special memories at the Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club Winter Carnival in Glen Cairn this year. It was a thrill to be around Rosie and May, two beautiful horses, and to be entertained by their sleigh driver who kept us all warm with laughter despite a frosty -18C.

I also enjoyed the pancakes at the Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club Winter Carnival. It was great to meet and talk with all the volunteers who bring our community together! This carnival is simply wonderful.

Here I am grabbing a bite to eat at Shawarma Master on Eagleson Road while I was touring businesses in Kanata South a few weeks ago.
