MPP Report ~ June 2020

On Wednesday Canadians will be celebrating our Nation’s birthday. I would like to extend my best wishes to your family and friends for a fun-filled Canada Day. Of course we will not all be together to take part in neighbourhood events like we have in past years. But that shouldn't stop us from waving the flag and counting our blessings for the fortunes of being Canadian. Happy Canada Day!
During the pandemic I have been in touch with many residents, but I do miss seeing and talking with you at community meetings and events. I encourage you to connect and let me know how you and your family have managed through this period. I hope we might see one another soon but, in the meantime, email me at

I look forward to hearing from you,

On June 25th local businesses participated in a roundtable discussion with Hon. Rod Phillips, Ontario's Minister of Finance and the Chair of a special cabinet committee - the Ontario Jobs and Recovery Committee. Business leaders Sir Terry Matthews, Leo Lax, John Luszczek and others spoke about the Province's opportunities for growth, and what the Ontario Government might do to support the high tech sector. Thank you to Kanata North Business Association President Jamie Petten who facilitated the discussion on local priorities. The roundtable was an excellent opportunity to provide input to Minister Phillips who is focused on initiatives that will restore and grow Ontario's economy.
The Ontario Government continues to re-open the province in a prudent and responsible manner to transition us to “a new normal.” Workplace guidelines are now in place so businesses can safely reopen for both employees and customers. Outdoor recreational amenities, including sports facilities and multi-use fields, off-leash dog areas, and outdoor picnic sites, benches and shelters in parks and recreational areas, are now open. We ask that everyone respectfully practice physical distancing, keep to a social circle of 10 people, and wear a mask where you may be challenged to maintain a 2 metre distance with others. Stay informed of the latest COVID-19 news from the Ontario Government.

You may also wish to reference my Information and Resources Page on the MPP website for key phone and online contact coordinates for COVID-19 information and services in our community.
This month I relaunched a community initiative "Let's Get Active." The objective of initiative are to get youth active in sports and recreational activities so that they will develop healthy lifelong habits regarding physical activity. Learn more about "Let's Get Active."

Did you know that there are 75 days between the first day of summer and Labour Day? Here is a checklist of suggested fun activities around Kanata and West Carleton. The summer is before us, so lace up your shoes and "Let's Get Active!": 75-Day Summertime Challenge Checklist

I encourage everyone to please support local businesses. Make a conscious effort to buy local, shop in Kanata and West Carleton shops, and do your business within the Ottawa business community. Support local businesses first and foremost.
For example, in Carp, did you know that the Carp Farmers Market is now open Saturday mornings? While you are there you can visit Alice's and the Creamery for a treat! (Below photo: I did just that recently!)

I would like to congratulate all the graduates in the Class of 2020 - whether you are in one of the many Kanata and West Carleton high schools, or in one of Ottawa's post-secondary institutions. I wish you well in the next steps of your journey. Congratulations on this milestone and may you find fulfillment and happiness in your life pursuits.

For those students who will be returning to school in September, the Ontario Government has recently issued a statement about the possible school day routine. This statement outlines how students can safely return to classrooms and continue their learning. It announces new funding for cleaning, cleaning protocols, and financial support to hire additional custodial staff to ensure schools are safe. Click here to learn more about what can be expected for the 2020-21 school year.

One of my many Zoom meetings this month was with the leadership team of the Carp Fair. Thank you to Ryan Foley, Patricia Boyd and Annie Craig for updating me on operations during COVID19 and of the decisions that need to be made for the 2020 and the 2021 seasons. All involved with the Fair are putting first the safety of its customers and its exhibitors, workers and volunteers. This will ensure our Carp Fair continues to be "the best little fair in Canada."
June 7th marked the second anniversary of the 2018 Provincial Election. In passing this milestone as MPP for Kanata-Carleton residents, I remain humbled and honoured to represent my home in the Provincial Legislature. I entered politics because I was concerned about the future of our community and I appreciate the opportunity I have been given as an elected representative. I strive to be a strong voice for the interests of Kanata-Carleton and a positive and constructive voice for our Province.
I continue to spend most days and evenings on the phone or exchanging emails with residents of Kanata and West Carleton. My Community Office has been operating virtually - my constituency staff and I have been functioning remotely. Please do not hesitate to connect with us if we can be of assistance because we are only a phone call or email away.
