Today I woke up extremely grateful for the life that I have today. November 6th, 2018 I was sitting in a jail cell, the law, wearing those lovely silver bracelets or locking me in a cage could not come between me and my addition. That just shows how POWERFUL this disease is and how I did anything and everything to get that next one, even in an outside world being treated like an animal. As my mother would say, “I’d much rather be on the outside looking in, then on the inside looking out. “ it is a sad cold world, when that door locks shut behind you and you can’t get out, when everything gets taken from you, and your freedom is lost.
I’m so grateful that I was given the opportunity to go to treatment as an alternative to a prison sentence even after being incarcerated for a while. The judge and my loved ones all saw something in me after the many chances that I was given in the past and thought that maybe this time would be different. I don’t know why they believed in me that I could do this, because on some days, I don’t even believe in myself but sometimes it’s what others see in me that matters. They all saw something that I couldn’t yet see in myself. Being in there always made me want recovery because I was searching for something that wasn’t real, all I always wanted in that inside world was to get out and get my freedom back but not to get and stay clean. I would get out and do the same bullshit all over again and always wonder how I got there again. It’s not what brings us here that matters but what keeps us here. I am forever grateful for the program of Narcotics Anonymous. I wanna thank anyone who’s ever been a part of my recovery and has helped me through this process. Without you guys, this would not be possible. Thanks Discovery for accepting me into the treatment facility and for helping me achieve the 14 months that I have today!

Unsung Heros

Madison & Megan

Discovery Institute would like to acknowledge two employees for this months Unsung Hero Award. Madison Fauci, CADCI, discharge planner/utilization review manager and Megan Reeves, A.S, CADCI, discharge planner/case management.
Both Madison and Megan play a pivotal role within the short term/detox programs. They both Do an exceptional job of meeting clients where they are at and professionally educating  them on the best clinical options post treatment at Disocvery Institute. Whether it be Megan in detox setting up aftercare for a client within a matter of minutes, or Madison in the short term program finding aftercare placement for someone with limited options. Both take pride in their work and genuinely care about the clients well being and making
sure that they are set up for success.

Thank you both for all you do!

The disease concept of addiction is verbalized frequently, and I believe is central to treatment. However, there usually is a watered-down interpretation given to most clients and their loved ones. It is certainly understood that the brain is highly impacted by substance use and brain health disorders. The brain is central to everything in our lives. It is responsible for our thoughts, feelings and ultimately for our personality and behaviors. This is a simple concept, yet do we utilize all of our options to help our clients heal their brain? I argue that we don’t. It stands to reason that how well a person’s brain functions correlates to their wellbeing and functioning in all aspects of life.
Most current mainstream substance use and brain health treatment options emphasize medicinal psychiatric treatments, medication assisted treatment (MAT) and therapeutic interventions, all of which can be effective. In most substance use or mental health treatment facilities, there are typically no biological tests utilized to confirm a mental health diagnosis or functioning of the brain. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a way to view issues with brain functioning in our clients? While mental health inventories or criteria are used to diagnose disorders, they don’t always paint the whole picture. READ MORE
