We may not know what school will look like this year, but we will be here supporting students no matter what. With that, we are excited to kick off our Student Success Back-to-School Drive!  Whether learning takes place in classrooms or virtually, starting off the school year with required supplies is crucial to student achievement and confidence.

The SPUR Student Success Drive provides new backpacks and school essentials to children in Lynn, Marblehead, Salem and Swampscott in grades K-12. The need is great this year with 600 children depending on a sponsor to ensure they have the required supplies to support learning.

Children are identified by their case worker, school adjustment counselor, homeless education liaison, or food pantry director as these professionals work closely with the students and know their personal circumstances.

There are three ways you can partner with us to provide 600 backpacks this year.
  1. Sponsor a Backpack. Click here to make a tax deductible gift. All supplies and backpacks will be delivered to SPUR and assembled at our office.
  2. Volunteer to Fill Backpacks. Join us at the SPUR office between Friday, August 7  and Saturday, August 22 to fill hundreds of new backpacks with school supplies, personalize notes, and prepare for area programs to pick up for the children. We have implemented additional safety guidelines to ensure social distancing.  Sign ups will be available soon.
  3. Spread the Word. Share our posts on Facebook or Instagram, forward this newsletter, or tell a friend.
The need is great but, with your help, achievable. Join us to SPUR Student Success!

Community Roots Garden Update
It's harvest season in the SPUR Community Roots Garden at St. Andrew's!  Whether you have a green thumb or no gardening experience at all, volunteering in the Community Roots Garden is a great way to make a positive impact on our community while safely practicing social distancing! Our expanded garden offers many flexible opportunities to volunteer for the whole family at a variety of days and times throughout the week.

Meal Service Program Update
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, SPUR's commitment to our meal service program with community partners has not waivered.  Recently, we have implemented additional safety measures in order to return to limited in-person volunteer opportunities with Bridgewell Recuperative Care Center.  We're looking forward to exploring more ways to creating additional opportunities for safe, in-person volunteer opportunities in our community.

Go Green and Help SPUR Clean!
On Saturday, June 28, SPUR volunteers came together at parks and beaches throughout Lynn, Marblehead, Salem, and Swampscott to pick up trash and debris. Buckets and bags were filled with cans, bottles, cigarette butts, plastic straws, spent fireworks containers, an old shoe, styrofoam containers, mylar balloons, and more, thanks to 70 awesome volunteers.

Thank you to everyone who made the clean up a success!
