It's officially August, which means school will be here before we know it. With that, we are excited to kick off our Student Success Back-to-School Drive on August 1st!  Starting off the school year with required supplies is crucial to student achievement as well as confidence, helping to ensure all children arrive to school with supplies to support learning.

The SPUR Student Success Drive provides new backpacks and school essentials to children in Lynn, Marblehead, Salem and Swampscott in grades K-12. The need is great this year with over 600 children depending on a sponsor.

Children are identified by their case worker, school adjustment counselor, homeless education liaison or food pantry director as these professionals work closely with the children and know their personal circumstances.

Among other considerations, effort is made to select children who are not receiving backpacks and school supplies from other groups and organizations; intentionally providing as many children as possible a solid start to their academic year.
There are three ways you can partner with us to provide over 600 backpacks this year.
  1. Sponsor a Backpack. Click here to make a tax deductible gift. All supplies and backpacks will be delivered to SPUR and assembled at our office.
  2. Volunteer to Fill Backpacks. Join us at the SPUR office between 8/11 and 8/17 to fill hundreds of new backpacks with school supplies, personalize notes, and prepare for area programs to pick up for the children. The sign up will be available here starting August 5th.
  3. Spread the Word. Share our social media posts, newsletter, or tell friends via word-of-mouth. The need is great and with your help, achievable.
Let us SPUR Student Success together for our collective children!
Many Thanks to Our Sponsors
Community Roots Garden Update
We are thrilled to share The Church of St. Andrew's has invited us to extend our stay in their front yard and expand the Community Roots Garden! August 5th - 7th we have a large group of middle school students coming to help dig, install new garden beds, move dirt and get the space prepared to grow even more food in the 2020 season. We are seeing a handful of adults to join us in the garden during this time to help. If you'd like to join the exciting expansion please sign up here.

Last year the garden yielded 760 pounds of organic vegetables to area food pantries. We are hopeful that this expansion will allow us to serve more than 1,000 pounds of fresh produce to our community starting next year. No gardening experience necessary, just the ability to move dirt, dig and have fun in the name of growing produce for neighbors facing food insecurity.
Summer Camp Update
For nearly two years, SPUR has dreamed of a summer camp and thanks to our hard working team and partnership with Tower School, this week, the camp has come to life!

Camp InSPURation at Tower School is a forward-thinking purpose driven 10 day camp that aims to teach youth ages 10-16 how to read architecture plans, safely use power tools and put those life skills to use for the benefit of other kids and realize their power to positively impact their communities. This year, the campers are building a playhouse to be gifted to a local agency for therapeutic counseling.

Follow us on Facebook or Instagram to see the incredible progress of just three days work – or pass by Tower on Cornell Street to see first-hand the inspiring work.

Volunteer Opportunity at Root
We are getting the word out to help our friends at Root. They are looking for volunteers to assist with an upcoming resume building workshops this week, and mock interview practice in August.

For many of the students, this is their first experience seeing a resume. Your help provides more one-on-one assistance for everything from content to format. As they near graduation, Root will run the mock interview sessions to give their students an opportunity to practice and become a little more comfortable in an interview session with an unfamiliar person.
