Ban Ki-moon: APFW 2019 keynote speaker
The Keynote Speaker
Mr Ban Ki-moon will share his insights on the role of forests in building peace and promoting well-being at the Asia-Pacific Forestry Week (APFW) 2019.
Mr Ban has long advocated for global peace and wellbeing, acknowledging the vital integration of forestry in achieving these goals. During his second term as the Eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), he championed the launch of the International Year of Forests in 2011 as “an opportunity to educate the global community about the great value of forests” and the “extreme social, economic and environmental costs of losing them”.

Mr Ban’s advocacy for global engagement and empowerment of all citizens has underpinned his work in strengthening UN actions on climate change and peace, and in co-founding of the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens which emphasizes the empowerment of women and youth under the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In 2018, he urged support for the Peace Forest Initiative, to enhance trust and build lasting peace in post-conflict situations, whilst also mitigating land degradation. As Chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) he has facilitated member countries to successfully adopt the green growth model of development.
