Craig is the owner of a 2021 SR22 GTS – VH-MOR and is based at Wynyard Airport, Tasmania.
Have you always wanted to learn to fly?
I had a fascination with planes and helicopters as a small child, but by the time I was 12 I wanted to be an Air Force pilot. That dream took a left turn in year 11 and I went off and pursued a trade.
What made you start learning?
I dreamt of GA training as an apprentice but never perused it until my wife bought me a trial flight voucher for Christmas 2009.
When did you learn to fly and where?
My original training was an RAAus Pilot Certificate through Skye Flight at the Wynyard Aero Club under experienced RA CFI Peter Reed. I continued to PPL through our local CFI Rob Sharman in 2013/14.

Why did you decide to purchase a Cirrus?
I fell in love with a SR22 that was doing circuits at Devonport when I was training - the sound….and then on closer inspection, the finish and fit out - it created the impossible dream. After initially owning a 1977 C182, it was an easy choice to upgrade to a faster more refined A to B 4-seater. We purchased our first SR22 G2 in 2015, and then 700 hours later, we upgraded to our G6 in 2021.
What missions do you use your aircraft for?
For us it is varied, plenty of long ‘away’ trips and just as many local flights purely for the flying. I am an active member of our local Wynyard Aero Club.
Where and how often do you fly?
Being Tassie based, we often jump across the pond for business meetings, along with local scenic and currency flying. I try to fly weekly, and a gap of four weeks is highly unusual.

What are the benefits of owning your own aircraft?
For me, it’s the convenience of having YOUR aircraft at your disposal whenever you want to jump in it.
How do you see you and your family enjoying the Cirrus Life in the future?
Part of our upgrade plan was to undertake ‘Grey Nomad’ style activities using our aircraft over the next couple of years. Everywhere we go with this beautiful G6 GTS Carbon it turns heads and people come up to admire her, she is our pride and joy. My answer to them is simple - never stop dreaming, you CAN achieve your dreams…#cirruslife

Flight One is an approved Cirrus Training Centre based at Brisbane’s Archerfield Airport. We get to know CSIP, Clint Dudman, as he shares his personal and career highlights.
Describe your job and how you support Cirrus Aircraft
I have been involved with Flight One for 11 years and have been the General Manager for seven years. I am also a Grade 1 Flight Instructor, the Head of Operations for flight training, and CASA appointed Flight Examiner. Flight One is the only Queensland based Cirrus Training Centre that supports new Cirrus owners, pilot recurrency and new to Cirrus pilot programs.  The new to Cirrus pilot programs include training from, ab-initio through to Commercial license, Instrument Rating and Night VFR rating training programs.  All training provided, is enhanced with the added structure of the Cirrus approach E-learning modules.
Have you always worked in the aviation industry – what led you to your career?
I had always wanted to become a pilot since I could remember. However, aviation was not my first job. I first worked in retail as a store manager, and then had a retail business of my own. I started pilot training part-time and received my Commercial license when I was 26 years old. From there I was employed as a charter pilot, before deciding at 33 years old to change tact and become a flight instructor.
What is your favourite part of the job?
In my pre-aviation jobs, I was always involved with training new employees or upgrading their credentials. I also found that as a charter pilot I was mainly performing ICUS supervision duties. Being a flight instructor and now flight examiner, has allowed me to re-engage with that excitement of bringing people through each stage to achieve their individual goals and milestones.

What are you most proud of accomplishing?
Following my passion and achieving my commercial license even at the ripe old age of 26 years. This was against many odds, as well as constantly being told that I wouldn’t make it and was too old for the airlines (not that I was looking at the airlines). I must say I did have a great cheer squad in my family, who backed me 200%!
Who has been the strongest influencer in your life?
In life so far, I don’t believe I have had one influencer. I do find that when presented with a challenge I draw on influences from many different people to ensure I approach the solution with as many options or alternatives as I need to succeed.
When you’re not working, what do you like to do in your spare time?
Golf is an interest that I am looking forward to re-engaging with. I do also enjoy fishing and watching the V8 supercars.
What is your top flight training tip to share with customers?
Never stop learning! Also, never think twice about asking that question!
Give us ONE word that would best describe the Flight One team?
ARC Aviation has been working closely with RealSimGear and CASA to certify the first RealSimGear Synthetic Training Device in Australia. The system replicates a G6 Cirrus SR22 flight deck running X-Plane 11 along with TorqueSim software and is capable of Cirrus CAPS simulation which is very helpful when training pilots on CAPS decision making.

The simulator is extremely useful in Instrument training allowing for a myriad of instrument procedures including RNP, ILS, VOR, LOC and GNSS approaches along with holding patterns and en-route navigation. 50% of your instrument training can be logged in the simulator which helps reduce cost, but more importantly, allows time for you and your instructor to repeat procedures easily and induce real-world weather conditions.
With winter on our doorstep, one of the most useful ratings a pilot can obtain is the IFR or PIFR. This rating will make you a better pilot, have a more in-depth understanding of weather and the associated phenomena and allow you to continue your flying without being hampered by inclement weather.
Contact one of our Cirrus Training Centres to discuss your options for obtaining an instrument rating.
