This month I had the privilege to speak with lead experts in the field of epidemiology on the topic of hand-washing. There are so many important takeaways and I encourage you to read the full interviews to get a more detailed understanding of the latest research and information. The biggest takeaway for me is that hands should be washed frequently, approximately every 40 minutes in order to prevent disease.
Our hands need to be washed more frequently if handling food, children or items handled by other people. As Dr. Triplett mentions, “Heal the people, heal the world.” It is critical to teach people about hand-washing as this will help them and their communities stay healthy. A study conducted in 2014 on hand-washing compliance with the use of visual cues shows that placing these cues to remind users to wash their hands had a significant effect on the numbers of users who washed their hands. This reinforces our belief at Signs That Save™ that visual cues are essential.
Another big takeaway from our expert, Ms. Jolian Stephens, is how important it is not to neglect your mental health and to seek support, which is especially critical during this time. Ms. Stephens’ stated, “You cannot pour from an empty glass and children are observant.” As a licensed mental health counselor and mother, I can attest that self-care is just as essential as hand washing.
