Letter From Pastor Chris

I wanted to wish each of you and all of your family a Merry Christmas this week.  Unfortunately this Christmas will look very different than holidays of the past.  We might not be able to join family and friends in the ways we would normally like to.  This can be difficult, especially after the many months of separation we have already endured this year.

The coming birth of Christ in just a few short days is a moment that gave a hopeless people hope.  As we reflect on the importance of his birth this holiday season, I believe it is an occasion that reminds us of the hope that is still possible today when all in our lives might seem hopeless.  May the birth of Christ this holiday season rekindle within you a Spirit of possibility.

Out of desperation, out of nowhere, and when we least expect it, the impossible can happen.  The birth of Christ was the impossible the ancient Israelites had been waiting for.  Be in awe this Christmas of how the birth of this child changed the world.  Hold onto the hope that such change is in store for us this coming year restoring us, moving us forward, and bringing us back together again.

First United Protestant Church of Hilo is a Congregationalist Church that was founded in 1868 and is part of the greater United Church of Christ.

Vision: Our vision is to welcome and love the diversity of all God’s People. To serve and support others through action and social justice. To be a community of faith which encourages spiritual growth through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Mission: Our mission is to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ by working together to overcome the barriers that exclude and divide people, so that God’s inclusive love may be known. To commit ourselves to where faithful action and outreach is needed both locally and around the world, so that others may experience peace and healing. To share in meaningful worship through uplifting music and fellowship. To offer Christian education through study, meditation, and prayer. It is our desire to walk with others on their spiritual journey as they are inspired and empowered to live as Jesus did: full of faith, hope, possibility, and love.
