About a month ago I was listening to an article on the radio that said if America's blind spot is gun law reform, Australia’s blind spot is Gambling law reform.
In NSW alone between June and November last year, $2.17 billion was lost to poker machines at clubs across the state. That does not include online Gambling or revenue from casinos (which we allow to take up some of the best shoreline of Sydney Harbour at Barangaroo!).
As a state we are addicted to the taxes that come from gambling and as a nation we are not brave enough to tackle the law reform that is needed. People are trapped in poverty cycles because of the addictive nature of gambling.
There is a video that is a conversation between Rev Keith Garner (retired head of Wesley Mission), Rev Tim Costello (head of the Alliance for Gambling Reform) and Rev Simon Hanford (Moderator of the NSW/ACT Synod). This video is very helpful in opening our eyes to some of the issues around gambling in Australia.
As Christians, we need to work against the damage that Gambling has in our society and work towards making our Nation more Christ like.
Have a look at the video, it's worth watching:
