CHECK IT OUT
In honor of the church's 175th anniversary we have a new history cabinet located in Kenyon Hall. The cabinet will feature various historical items from the church's holdings. The displays will change throughout the year so stop by periodically and check out what is currently on display. Thanks to Arnie Brown and Ned Johnson for the purchase of the cabinet and for creating the displays.
In 2020 First Church is celebrating its 175th anniversary. Each week of 2020 we will publish a History Moment. These short informational pieces will share bits and pieces of our history that we hope you will find interesting and even amusing.
On March 4, 1845 a small group met for Bible study in the log cabin home of Rev. Ezra Rathburn located on the east side of the Des Moines River. Then in April of that same year he began to conduct services in the home of John Baird and others. At midnight on October 11th when the area on the west side of the river was opened to settlers, Herbert Hoxie and Jonathan Rathburn left in the middle of a prayer meeting to hurry across the river to lay claim to the two best cabins that had been vacated by the soldiers who had been stationed at Fort Des Moines. In 1846 the first Sunday School class was held in the Hoxie’s log cabin home. By 1847 the membership numbered 220. This was the humble beginning of First Church.
