Peace: A state of mutual harmony between people or groups.

Monday, September 21st is the International Day of Peace. As we prepare for this important day, we encourage you to watch this short video of faith leaders speaking about peace:  https://youtu.be/LkTl5nGW7CI

As we prepare for the International Day of Peace, we want to invite you to join the Des Moines Faith Committee for Peace for their observance focused around the theme "Shaping Peace Together."

On Monday, September 21st Central Iowa artist Ted Lyddon Hatten will work with New Zealand artists, Joyce Majendie and Pete Majendie to create Hope is the Thing, a global art installation about peace, hope and birds. The artists will be working on the art all day but from 6:30-7:00 pm (Central Time) the completion of the art installation will be livestreamed on the Des Moines Faith Committee for Peace Facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/Des-Moines-Faith-Committee-for-Peace-440186426119102

Artist Ted Lyddon Hatten explains that this event will be used to offer a means of sharing signs of hope as a way of shaping peace together...to connect two sides of the world together to promote peace.

This will be a half-hour well spent and it will also be a way to open our hearts to the prospect of peace. Please join the Des Moines Faith Committee for this important event and share this post with your friends.

Refrigerator Fund Raiser

Every month First Church prepares and serves two meals a month for those in our community who are hungry. We are fortunate to have a kitchen that is well designed and equipped for this type of ministry. However, several weeks ago Shirley Christoffersen reported that the two-door refrigerator was running at over 90 degrees! A service call was made and the compressor is no longer working. It would cost almost as much to repair the old unit as to purchase a new one.

As you know, without worshipers in the building, funds are extremely limited. We know however that to keep this ministry going, we must replace the unit. Christine went in search of a new refrigerator and was told the supply chain is currently so disrupted that it could be several months before a new unit could be obtained. This week she received a call from a local supply company saying they would be receiving in stock the refrigerator she had inquired about and if the church wanted to purchase it they would not put it on the sales floor.

Now the question became…how do we pay for it? After consulting with the Pacesetters class, it was agreed that they would pay for the refrigerator upfront and we would solicit funds from the congregation to replace their account. This is a very generous offer and we thank them.

So now it is up to members to help us repay them. If you are able, please send a donation to the church and label it refrigerator. The total cost for the new unit, delivery and set up and removal of the old unit is $3,728.07.  You may also go to our website DMFirstChurch.org and give online

As you know, our kitchen gets a great deal of use not only for homeless meals but also for various church functions. Your gift will ensure our continued ability to provide food that is not only tasty but safe!

Thank you.

Make a Difference in Our Community - VOTE

First Church makes a difference in the community in a number of ways and one of the easiest ways that you can continue to make a difference in the community is by voting.

are now available, and if you would like an application to vote by mail but don’t have a printer to complete the ballot request, please contact the church office at 515-244-6209 and we will mail you a ballot request for you to complete and send to your county auditor.

Even though you are not present in worship on Sundays, the church still has expenses. We still need to continue to do ministry, pay the bills and the staff. Did you know that you can now give online? Go to the church website www.dmfirstchurch.org. On the left hand side of the page you will see online giving. Click there and you will be directed to the giving page. If you would rather, please feel free to mail your weekly check to the church. The address is 1001 Pleasant St. Des Moines, IA 50309. Thank you!

Holy Communion Discontinued During Covid

Due to wi-fi technology issues, First Church has been pre-recording our worship services rather than live-streaming them on Sundays. Upon careful reading of Bishop Haller's directives, Holy Communion can only be offered online if the service is live-streamed, not pre-recorded and then posted. Unfortunately that means that until we return to in-person worship, we will no longer be able to provide Communion.

We look forward to the day when we are once again able to join together at the Lord's Table.
Worship ~ We Welcome Everyone

First United Methodist Church, at the top of 10th Street in downtown Des Moines, strives to love others as Christ loves us and, in doing so, to be the Body of Christ in word and deed.

As the Body of Christ, we welcome all of God’s children, knowing that each is created in the image of God. We welcome people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, races, ethnicities, family configurations, and physical and mental capabilities to join us in full participation as we come together to worship God and then go out to share God’s love in the world around us.
