November 17, 2019 23rd Sunday after Pentecost Psalm 84
1 Corinthians 12:12-26
At First Church we are thankful for each and every person who attends worship and we want to celebrate! On Sunday, November 24th we will have a special worship service and after church coffee. We want this to be a fun day to celebrate this church, its members and its ministries.
We had set a goal to have 100+ people in worship but we think we are underestimating you so we are going to raise our goal to 125+! We know you can do it.
If we reach our goal, Pastor Edgar and Christine will show their excitement by doing one of the following:
1. Dye their hair during worship. 2. Dress up as pilgrims. 3. Dress in surprise costumes.
Here is where you come in. On the attendance sheet Sunday you will see these three options listed. Please select which one you would like to see. You may vote this week only if you didn’t vote last Sunday. Votes will be tallied and on the 24th you will have to attend worship to see how the votes came in.
Don't forget to vote and then attend worship on the 24th!
Sometimes the life of a missionary can be lonely especially when you are far from home. We want our missionary, Chin Cho to know we are thinking about him by sending a birthday greeting. This Sunday, please stop by the table in Kenyon Hall and sign the card.
Pie Cards Available
It's that time again. Baker's Square pie cards are available for purchase. If you need a pie for the holiday season, stop by our table and pick up a card. This $16 card will entitle you to any pie (carrot cake and cheesecake not included).
These cards also make great stocking stuffers too!
Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve the evening meal for the Central Iowa Shelter on Monday, December 2. If you can help with either or both, please contact Shirley Christoffersen at 276-3112 or while at worship check the box on the attendance slip and you will be contacted. Donations for meal expenses are always appreciated.
During the month of November, Shirley Christoffersen is recruiting volunteers to help with the meals we will serve next year for the Children & Family Urban Movement (CFUM) Supper Club on the third Friday of each month. Preparation begins about 1:30 p.m. in our kitchen and the meal is transported to Trinity UMC to serve at 4:45 p.m.
If you would like to help with these meals in 2020, please contact Shirley or check the box on the attendance slip and she will be in contact to learn how you would like to help and what schedule best fits your plans. Donations for meal expenses are also being sought, although you may give any time throughout the year by simply designating your gift for the CFUM Supper Club. Thank you, the most important part of this ministry is you!
We Can Use Your Help
First Church is without the services of a janitor. We are currently in the recruitment process but until we find the right person, we need to keep the church clean. We are looking for folks to help us out on Mondays and Fridays. You can give us as much time as you are able. Please see the sign-up board in Kenyon Hall for tasks. Questions? Talk with Pastor Edgar or Christine.
We come to this place each Sunday to worship God. After timing each segment of the service we find that we are using approximately 10 minutes of our worship time for announcements and greetings. To keep our worship services close to one hour we are going to implement two changes.
1. Each Sunday only one or two announcements will be verbally lifted up. As usual announcements will be printed in the bulletin and in addition, prior to worship, they will be projected onto the northwest wall. Please read through them carefully.
2. We know that greeting each other is an important part of worship however it seems the greeting time is getting longer. During the greeting time please greet those around you. After the postlude is concluded or during after church coffee you may greet others.
Thanks for your help with this.
Be sure to notice in the north entryway a display set up by Trudy and Don Gurnsey. This year Trudy and Don are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations to them! The Gurnseys believe that they have been blessed and they wanted to do something to bless others. Every month Don gathers the food pantry items we collect before Communion, counts them and delivers them to the Food Pantry.
If you also feel that God has blessed you, we invite you to show your thanks to God by bringing non-perishable food items and placing them at the display. Before Thanksgiving they will be collected and delivered to the Food Pantry. Thank you.
It is not too late to submit a digital photo or "selfie" for our "Church Family Photo Album" to Jacque Coulson via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Other questions? You may also call Jacque at 515-279-2473.
Senior Health Insurance Information Program
Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) is a federally-funded program operated in Iowa through the Department of Insurance. The program’s mission is to provide trained volunteer counselors to assist seniors, disabled persons on Medicare, and those about to turn 65 navigate through the complex world of Medicare.
Counselors assist, on a no-fee basis, those about to enroll in Medicare, helping them select Medigap plans, choosing between regular Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, as well as aiding them in selecting and enrolling in a prescription drug plan (Medicare Part D).
Four downtown Des Moines congregations are members of The Bridge, which is a sponsor organization for SHIIP. If you are a member of one of these congregations and would like assistance, you can call SHIIP directly at 800-351-4664. A volunteer counselor will then contact you to help make appropriate Medicare decisions.
