As you know, in-person worship services have been delayed until at least the first Sunday of June. Many churches celebrate Holy Communion the first Sunday of each month and since we will not be together, churches are following the guidance of our Bishop, Laurie Haller. In her letter to the clergy she states “In this time of social distancing, we are one body physically separated into many parts, but we remain spiritually united as ‘one with each other, one with Christ and one in ministry to all of the world.'”

These are strange but not unprecedented times we are living in. During the Black Plague the historic church created a theological precedent known as Extremis (extreme circumstances). This approach allowed clergy to respond to a very extreme and difficult health crisis. It is by this precedent that our Bishop has decided to allow people at home to join in the sacrament of Holy Communion. She has extended permission for live-streaming worship services to include the sacrament of Holy Communion.

If you would like to join us for Communion on May 3, please gather up the following:

●     Bread and juice if you have it – if you have only bread, remember for centuries bread alone was used.

●     A napkin or cloth to cover remaining bread and cup for after communion.

●     A piece of paper and writing utensil for each person participating.

Even though we cannot be together in our buildings, when we join together in Holy Communion, we can witness to the world that when we break bread together, the living Christ is present with us.

Join us on Sunday, May 17th for a virtual after church coffee conducted on Zoom. If you already have Zoom downloaded on your computer you are good to go. If not, you will need to download the application and open an account. (The account is free).

Watch the May 15th Cross Notes for the link to join us and after watching worship on the 17th, you can join us on Zoom. Be sure to have your coffee, juice and cookie! This will be a fun way to check in and say hi to your faith community! Hope to "see" you then.

The Corona virus has caused us to change the way we live our lives and that even includes the way we do church. Along with cancelling worship, no face to face meetings will be held until worship services resume.

Even though you cannot join us in person you can watch our live/video worship service by going to our Facebook page, DSM First Church or to our YoutTube channel DSM First Church UMC. The service begins at 10:30 AM. You may also continue to give your tithes and offerings by going to our website and clicking on online giving on the bar to the left of this homepage or you can mail a check.

In addition on Thursdays, Pastor Edgar and Christine will be sharing a short video on our Facebook page and YouTube channel. If you are in need of a word of encouragement, we invite you to take a couple of minutes out of your day and watch. These videos will be launched at 7:00 PM on Thursdays. They will also be available on our YouTube channel. This week's video is for the children of the church so kids, check it out.

Until we see each other again, let us be faithful and kind to one another.  Let us remember each other in prayer and know that we can still lift up and comfort each other no matter the distance between us.

May God be with you!

Even though you are not present in worship on Sundays, the church still has expenses. We still need to continue to do ministry, pay the bills and the staff. Did you know that you can now give online? Go to the church website On the left hand side of the page you will see online giving. Click there and you will be directed to the giving page. If you would rather, please feel free to mail your weekly check to the church. The address is 1001 Pleasant St. Des Moines, IA 50309. Thank you!

St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral invites you to come and hear their carillon on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM. You may park on the street or surrounding parking lots. This will give you an opportunity to listen to joyful hymns being played for the downtown community. Please remain in your vehicle and observe social distancing guidelines.

Caregivers at Unity Point can use some encouragement as they prepare for what might be coming. If you would like to offer a word of encouragement, click link here:

Gift Cards

The Outreach Ministry Team has been in touch with Methodist Hospital to see what we could do for our neighbors. It was suggested that we might purchase restaurant gift cards for members of a specific department. One group that is very important during Covid19 is respiratory therapists.

If you are feeling helpless and would like to make a difference here is your opportunity. To help us purchase restaurant gift cards, please either mail a check made payable to the church with "hospital gift" in the memo line or go to the church website and donate there. This will not only provide thanks and encouragement to hospital employees but it will also help restaurants who are struggling to stay in business.

Each gift card is $25.
We are still in need of about 15 cards. We would like to finish this project and get the cards delivered by May 15th so if you would like to say thanks, please send your check or donate online before that date. Thanks.

To keep each planter filled
for the summer and fall season
costs approximately $100.

You can donate online at
or send a check to the church with "planter" in the memo line.

You may join in with a friend to share the cost.

AMOS Update
Through the use of Zoom technology AMOS (A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy) continues to function and make a difference in our communities while we are practicing social distancing and staying at home as much as possible.

On Tuesday, April 21, AMOS leaders lead a successful virtual action around unemployment.  There were 85 AMOS leaders, Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend, and a dozen state legislators in attendance.

Director Beth Townsend and Iowa Workforce Development have already been responsive to AMOS' concerns and have committed to:

* Hire 100 temporary staff members to handle call and claim volume.

* Make changes to the website and phone recording system to make the phone system less confusing.

* Work with AMOS to address language barriers and focus training on gaps, especially around CARES Act eligibility.

We thank them for their responsiveness and we look forward to working together to ensure Iowans have the economic support system they need during this crisis.

Check out Iowa Capital Dispatch's article on the action:

If you are interested in learning more about AMOS and/or becoming involved with the AMOS team at First Church, we invite you to contact Wanda Wendt via her email at or her cell phone number of 515.229.6399.

Worship ~ We Welcome Everyone
First United Methodist Church, at the top of 10th Street in downtown Des Moines, strives to love others as Christ loves us and, in doing so, to be the Body of Christ in word and deed.
As the Body of Christ, we welcome all of God’s children, knowing that each is created in the image of God. We welcome people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, races, ethnicities, family configurations, and physical and mental capabilities to join us in full participation as we come together to worship God and then go out to share God’s love in the world around us.
