We will reopen on Tuesday, January 19th.

Volunteers are needed to help prepare the evening meal for the Central Iowa Shelter on Tuesday, February 2.

Join us on Zoom January 19th at 2:00 PM for an important conversation with ten Black leaders about racism in our churches and religious institutions.

Join the I’m Black. I’m Christian. I’m Methodist writers and editor Rudy Rasmus in a robust discussion moderated by GCORR (General Commission on Race and Religion), Interim General Secretary Garlinda Burton.

In the book, ten Black women and men explore life through the lens of compelling, personal accounts. They are leaders whose lives are tangible demonstrations of the power of a divine purpose and evidence of what grace really means in the face of hardship, disappointment, and determination.

This conversation will include topics such as:

  • What Has Racism Cost the Church?
  • Intersections of Race, Gender, and LGBTQIA+ Identity
  • Ministry and Racism
  • Conversations about Racism and The UMC
  • A book discussion about I'm Black.  I'm Christian.  I'm Methodist
Dear FUMC Members and Friends,

We want to update you on our most recent Covid-related decisions. At present, we are continuing to suspend in-person worship and other gatherings.  News reports and information from public health experts indicate that the next few weeks could be a particularly dangerous time in the progress of the pandemic. Consequently, it is not prudent for us to meet in person for the immediate future.

We will continue to monitor Polk County infection rates, information regarding vaccination availability and distribution, and guidance from the Iowa Annual Conference. It is our hope that by early spring, if we see a drop in infection rates and an increase in vaccination distribution, we will be able to return to in-person worship.

In the meantime, be sure to join us on Facebook or YouTube to participate in worship at First Church.

Grace and Peace,
Edgar Solis, Pastor
Christine Anders, Minister of Discipleship

Mental Health Clinic

Many people are experiencing changes in their mental wellness-to-illness continuum.

If you're experiencing a mental health crisis,
UnityPoint Health – Behavioral Health Urgent Care is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 1250 East 9th Street in Des Moines.  (515) 263-2632

This is a walk-in clinic for adults and/or children, staffed with professionals to determine if the feelings are a temporary situational effect or of clinical concern. Either way, they can suggest resources and/or referrals to help.

Worship ~ We Welcome Everyone

First United Methodist Church, at the top of 10th Street in downtown Des Moines, strives to love others as Christ loves us and, in doing so, to be the Body of Christ in word and deed.

As the Body of Christ, we welcome all of God’s children, knowing that each is created in the image of God. We welcome people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, races, ethnicities, family configurations, and physical and mental capabilities to join us in full participation as we come together to worship God and then go out to share God’s love in the world around us.
