“I get a lot of letters from people. They say, ‘I want to be a writer. What should I do?’ I tell them to stop writing to me and get on with it.” —Ruth Rendell

This month, we're so excited to welcome William (Bill) Ledbetter. He will speak on "How Anyone Can Write Science Fiction"
William Ledbetter is a Nebula Award winning author with two novels and more than seventy speculative fiction short stories and non-fiction articles published in five languages, in markets such as Asimov's, Fantasy & Science Fiction, Analog, Escape Pod and the SFWA blog.
He's been a space and technology geek since childhood and spent most of his non-writing career in the aerospace and defense industry. He is a member of SFWA, the National Space Society of North Texas, and a Launch Pad Astronomy workshop graduate. He lives near Dallas with his wife, a needy dog and three spoiled cats.
"Level Five" and "Level Six" the first two novels in his Killday Series are available from Audible Originals and soon in paper and e-book from Interstellar Flight Press.

Your next novel.
Traversing the spectrum of genres, I often ask myself, would this sell? The short answer is probably but, how many and to whom. Who is the target audience?
Much like a surfer, authors must be able to read the waves. When will the next good wave come in, and in keeping with the metaphor, how long can I ride it? If history is any predictor of what sells, we will gravitate towards children’s literature, leaning toward the paranormal. From witches to vampires, young adults never seem to tire of magic and fantasy.
A quick search of best-selling novels might lead you to believe it is time for another Dickens classic. Not so fast, it might be fun to write but, collecting dust could be its fate.
Once dominating the market, 50 Shades copies can be found lining the shelves of many half-price book stores. The lesson is, the wave will crash against the shore at some point.
We have all seen that cart full of books in front of the book store. Yes, the one that is outside and not watched very carefully. While sad, I peruse that cart often to see what is there and then ask why it might be there.
The takeaway from this message for authors is this, ‘write what you enjoy to read.’
What if you were walking through the forest and just happened to discover an alien craft that had been derelict for eons? What if something in your DNA triggered that craft to come to life?
If you enjoy what you wrote, the odds are great others will also.
-Best
Scott

This is a makeshift blurb for that detective story:
Detective Thea Morrison is as sharp and logical as they come, but she's about to find out that sometimes nailing the bad guy means breaking all the rules and opening her eyes to a world that's more mystical than she could ever imagine.
Scott
My current work in progress is science fiction. At ten thousand words into the story, there is an alien armada, in-bound to our solar system. It would appear they are in contact with another interloper from the other side of the solar system, currently in orbit of Europa. It seems they are ignoring the earth, or are they? Stay tuned..
Steve McCluer is a storyteller—literally. His oral storytelling background makes most of his stories seem like they should be read out loud. He joined our guild to polish his first full-length novel, which now has been rejected by over 120 literary agents. Self-publishing is in his future. Sales‽
