Hello Bosco Families,

Last week we welcomed back our Faculty and Staff to St. John Bosco High School. Thursday we gathered for a retreat centered on the theme, “Do all through love, nothing through constraint.” Don Bosco provides for us a model to build a community centered on love and development of the whole person. It is from this model that we continue working toward next week when we will be welcoming our Braves back to campus ready to start another fantastic school year.

As we continue to prepare for the school year I want to once again reiterate our commitment to full time in-person instruction. This commitment is supported by Covid guidance from California Department of Public Health, LA County Department of Public Health, and the Center for Disease Control. In accordance with their guidance, specific mitigations will be enforced to begin the school year: mandatory masking while indoors, frequent hand washing, and routine disinfection of common spaces. If we follow these protocols the greatest risk to compromising in-person instruction would be outbreaks. The easiest way to mitigate against an outbreak is vaccination. Vaccinations for individuals 12 and up, upon advice from a health care professional, are available and strongly encouraged to help mitigate any potential spread of COVID-19 within our St. John Bosco community.

As stated last week, we are excited to announce that Dr. Irene Malek and Dr. Mark Malek '92 will be administering free COVID-19 vaccines on Saturday, August 14th beginning at 9am at St. John Bosco High School. If you are interested in signing your son up for the vaccine, please complete the form below. Further details on time and location on campus will be shared with you the week of August 9th.

If you RSVP to receive your COVID-19 vaccine on August 14th, please also reserve Saturday, September 11th as that will be the date of your second vaccination.

New Student Orientation and Welcome Day will take place on Monday, August 16th from 8am - 2pm. Students should come to this event in their school uniform ready to learn all about the traditions of our great community.

Parent Service Hours

Each Bosco family is required to work a total of 25 hours of service in each of the four years; therefore, additional hours beyond the required 25 are not rolled over to the next year. The requirement is a per student obligation; parents with more than one son attending St. John Bosco High School have a 25-hour obligation per student.

We will also be allowing service hour credits for donated goods. There will be one service hour credit given for each $40 value of goods. It is the responsibility of the parents to contact the school to volunteer your time or goods to complete the required 25 hours. The family is responsible for keeping record of agreed upon assignments as reminder notices will not be sent.

The normal service hour cycle begins April 1 and ends March 31; this cycle corresponds with our present tuition billing cycle. After the end of each cycle, the fee for each incomplete hour will be charged to the appropriate tuition account. The school, however, continues to have a need for this type of participation through the end of the academic year. Any hours worked after the March 31 date will count for the next school year.

If a parent agrees to accept a service hour assignment and does not show up for that event, regardless of the circumstances, there will be a $25 per hour fee that will be charged to the tuition account. A minimum notification of three (3) business days is required to avoid this charge. Payment of this charge falls under the "Financial Agreement" category in your contract and also as stated in the Student-Parent Guide. This does not decrease the annual 25-hour obligation.

Special Events Service Hour Team

The Advancement Office is looking for 25-30 volunteers to join the Special Events Service Hour Team. Volunteers will assist Advancement with community events on and off campus. Roles can include event set-ups and clean-up, registration and other responsibilities related to event needs/logistics. Please email Amy Krisch if you're interested in joining this team. A team orientation and further details will be provided to those who sign-up.

Special Campus Store Hours: August 9th-30th

The Campus Store will be open from 10am to 3pm on M/W/F and 10am to 6pm on T/Th.  Stop by to purchase any remaining items you might need before school starts.   (Reminder: all students must be dressed in formal attire on August 17th.  SJB ties and other formal attire can be purchased in the Campus Store. )
CLASS OF 2022  - IMPORTANT UPDATE

Counseling Updates

Submit your Student Brag Sheet -The Brag Sheet for the Class of 2022 is ready to be completed! Counselors and teachers use your brag sheet to gain more information about you, which helps in writing recommendation letters for colleges and scholarships. It is a great idea to complete this over the summer, as it does take some time to thoroughly answer the questions, and it will give you one less item to complete this fall when everything gets particularly busy! Once your brag sheet is completed on Naviance, teachers and counselors will automatically be able to view it. Follow these steps to complete it:

Login to your Naviance account at https://student.naviance.com/stjohnbhs by entering your ID number and the password you’ve chosen (it asks for your email, but our accounts are not set up that way, so use the ID number instead). If you can’t remember your password, you’ll need to reset it, or contact your counselor for assistance.

  • Click on the drop-down near the top right

  • Click “Surveys from Your School”

  • Click “Brag Sheet- Class of 2022” and complete it with as much detail as possible. Make sure to save it.
