A new group is forming in the Arkansas River valley. This group will be created with like-minded folks who are interested in helping to preserve and restore heirloom apple varieties.
Did you know that Colorado used to be known as "The Orchard State"?

There are many historic orchards in the area that are thriving . We can even find the odd, single apple tree around the area that is flourishing. But, there are also trees (and orchards) out there that have been abandoned and could use a "kick start" of T.L.C. If you've ever wondered what sort of apples do well here or want to help promote healthy orchards, please come to the meeting!
Our new group will be modeled (somewhat) after the M.O.R.P group in Cortez. MORP stands for Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project.
The Arkansas Valley group will focus initially on mapping apple trees that are doing well in this climate, learning to identify the various varieties that thrive here, learning to prune trees correctly, and learning to graft these successful types onto other trees in the area, in order to increase overall apple production.
Please share with others who might be interested in learning more about preserving heirloom apple varieties.
Our first general meeting will be Sunday, February 24th, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Coaldale Schoolhouse, located at 287 Hayden Creek Rd. in Coaldale.
Please direct questions to Laurel and Will Biedermann at or 719-651-1207
Hope to see you there!

PLEASE... PLEASE...... PLEASE drive carefully

In this winter weather.

It's not just your life on the line.  It's the other drivers on the road and also the lives of the first responders racing to help you!

* WHAT...Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 12
inches, especially on the western slopes.

* WHERE...the Sangre de Cristo and Wet mountains.

* WHEN...Until 5 PM MST Tuesday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel could be very difficult. The
hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening
commute. The cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could
cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Recommended actions
A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather
conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you
must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your
vehicle in case of an emergency.
The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can
be obtained by calling 5 1 1.
Music Jam!

From Bruce Warren

Thanks to everyone who came down for the Coaldale Acoustic Jam last month at the Coaldale Schoolhouse.  The February jam will be on Saturday the 23rd @ 2 pm.  This is also a round robin format--players of any genre, as well as listeners, are all welcome.  Many thanks to the Coaldale Community Building Association for providing this jam and concert space.  I love this venue and for a teeny, tiny yearly fee you can become a CCBA member and help support all the great things they do.  For more info and to get on their events email listing, write to
And lastly the Bluegrass-Irish-whatever band that I am in has recently changed our name.  Formerly the Grassy Knoll Ramblers we have severed any reference to the Kennedy assassination and now go by Smeltertown-- I can see the merchandise now....."gritty music from the other side of the tracks"....  What fun it is to play withTom Plant, Dale Andersen, Sarah Hamilton and Dawn Dennison.  We will be performing and eating pie at the Coaldale Schoolhouse on Friday, March 29, which some folks are referring to as PieGrass or PiePalooza, while the great majority of folks don't refer to it all......yet.  There are two options for admission at the door: $10 or bring a homemade pie and $5.  Please respond to me at this email address for reservations--it would be great to know if 40 people and 5 pies will show up or 5 people and 40 pies (wait, how would that work 🤔).  Concert starts at 7 pm and we'll all enjoy pie at intermission.
