NEW WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY
New Women's Grow Class: An Invitation to the Good Life
The Women's Grow Classes will be kicking off a new study starting September 6th and 7th.  Amos is often called a prophet of doom. When you begin to read his prophecy, it doesn’t take long to realize that nickname fits. On the surface, his prophecy doesn’t sound like a happy formula for the good life. However, every condemnation he gives serves as an invitation, a cry for us to “seek God and live” (Amos 5:4). Through the study, you'll learn how to live assured, faithful, chosen, humble, justly, prayerful, and hopeful.  Click here to learn more and register to attend the Tuesday night or Wednesday night class.

HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE: OBSERVATION
During the second week of his "How to Study the Bible" Grow Class, Pastor Marcus Bellamy taught how to use observation to understand scripture.  Observation is simply about answering the question, “What do I see as I read this passage of scripture?”

Part of observation includes understanding the different genres of the Bible.

The Old Testament contains testimonies written before Jesus came to earth and falls into five genres:

1. LAW
Gives factual retellings of real events. First 5 books are written by Moses and tell of God’s character. Sin brought need for law.
Books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy

2. HISTORY
Tells what God did through people and various families.
Books: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther

3. POETRY
Gives wisdom and life advice but does not make promises. Has meter and rhythm but doesn’t rhyme.
Books: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon

4. MAJOR PROPHETS
Provides direction and wisdom during times of crisis. “Major” solely because of the amount of text.
Books: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel

5. MINOR PROPHETS
Reveals God through what he has done in the past and what He plans to do in the future.
Books: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi

The New Testament contains testimonies written after Jesus came to earth and falls into four genres:

1. GOSPELS
Tells of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ from four different perspective.
Books: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John

2. CHURCH HISTORY
Bridges much of the period between the Gospel story of Jesus and the Letters to the Church.
Book: Acts

3. EPISTLES
21 Letters written, primarily by the apostles, to their churches or church leaders.
Books: Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1 Peter,
2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Jude

4. PROPHECY
Tells what God has done in the past, is doing in the present, and will do in the future to preserve and protect his people, destroy his enemies, and renew his creation.
Book: Revelation

When you’re reading the Bible from the standpoint of an observer, you are looking to answer five questions.

Example: Acts 1:8
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

1. WHO?  (WHO IS SPEAKING AND WHO IS IT TO)
Was possibly written by Luke to Theophilus.  The speaker is Jesus.  The word “you” is used three times in the scripture.

2. WHAT? (MAIN EVENTS, IDEAS, TEACHING, PURPOSE)
Will receive power (possibly strength, words, wisdom).  Will be my witnesses (indicates that they belong to Jesus).

3. WHEN? (WRITTEN, TAKES PLACE, PAST/PRESENT/FUTURE)
“Comes on” … indicates the Holy Spirit is close to arriving.

4. WHERE? (PLACES MENTIONED OR WHERE IT HAPPENED)
Jerusalem, all of Judea and Samaria, to the ends of the earth.

5. WHY? (PURPOSE)
Said to give comfort to the listeners as they witness to people across the world.

6. HOW? (HOW DOES IT HAPPEN, WHAT TRUTH WAS ILLUSTRATED)
Through the power received by the Holy Spirit.

The next “How to Study the Bible” Grow Class will happen at 6:00 p.m. tonight in the Chapel at Trinity Baptist Church.  All are welcome to attend.
