THE MONARCH

October 3, 2019
Magnolia Monarchs at the Opera

This past Monday, our 5th grade class enjoyed a leisurely outing to see Houston Grand Opera's performance of Tomie dePaola's timeless folktale, Strega Nona. This production corresponded well with their Language Arts curriculum for this year, which includes an in-depth study of folktales, myths, and fables.
Following the performance, the girls enjoyed a walk to the beautiful McGovern Centennial Gardens and a picnic lunch under the shade of a majestic live oak. Before returning to Magnolia School for an end of the day Italian treat (Strega Nona would have certainly approved!), our students visited with and sang for some of the residents of a nearby rehabilitation facility for the elderly and infirm. It was a lovely day which incorporated many elements of a Magnolia education- beautiful art, friendship, service, and time in nature. We can't wait to see where our Monarchs head next!
Annual Fund

We hope you received our Annual Fund letter in your mailbox last week! The Annual Fund is an opportunity for our community to ensure that Magnolia School will flourish for many years to come. Achieving 100% participation in the Annual Fund from our entire community will demonstrate our shared commitment to Magnolia School and increase our fundraising potential with new donors.

To this end, we would like to announce a fun incentive to encourage participation from every Magnolia family. Once a grade level achieves the goal of 100% participation, the girls in that grade will get to enjoy an ice cream party hosted by Magnolia School. Let's help our Monarchs get to enjoy some sweet treats as soon as possible by contributing today to the Annual Fund!

Readers' Theatre Club

Our 5th-7th grade Language Arts teacher, Ms. Yordan, recently started offering an afternoon Readers' Theatre Club to her students. The girls are assigned roles from various short scripts and perform dramatic readings. Selections include adaptations of Shakespearean plays, Greek tragedies, classic fairytales, re-enactments of historical events, as well as some original stories.
These Monarchs are developing their fluency, reading comprehension, interpretation skills, and public speaking confidence, not to mention growing in virtues of leadership, cooperation, and friendship. The best part is they get to do all of this while having plenty of fun with their friends and teachers!
Magnolia School Wish List

As we are settling in to our first semester, our teachers have come together to create an Amazon wish list of books and supplies for our students. Please consider donating one (or more!) of the items off of this list, which will be updated regularly. If you would like to donate a book in honor of a loved one, please send that information as a note with your order through Amazon.

Thank you for your generosity!
Historic First Athletic Game

Thursday, September 26, 2019 was the first ever sporting event for Magnolia School.  The Magnolia Monarchs in 6th and 7th grade made us all proud with their wonderful effort on the volleyball court at St. Cecilia.

We have practiced in less than ideal conditions, however, that didn’t slow our spirit as the girls cheered for one another with incredible enthusiasm.  While we didn’t take home the win, we could not be more proud of our girls and the way they represented Magnolia School.

A thank you to Coach Leger for jumping into this adventure and guiding these beautiful girls in teamwork, good sportsmanship and courage.
