THE MONARCH

December 12, 2019
First Monarch Day
A Monarch Day is an exceptional day of celebration, community, and competition. Magnolia School hosted our first Monarch Day this past Friday, and it could not have been a more glorious occasion. The day began in a flood of sunlight under which representatives from each grade level shared the poems they had committed to memory for our Poet Laureate competition. Our first outdoor all school Mass followed, celebrated by Fr. Frank Vera. After Mass, the girls enjoyed a myriad of cooperative and competitive games, pairing younger girls with older girls and allowing everyone to bond with their house. After taking a break for a lunch time feast, the girls returned to playing games until it was time to announce the Poets Laureate of each grade. It was a day to remember and we are already eagerly anticipating our second Monarch Day in the spring.
The Reigning Poets Laureate of Magnolia School

Formed from the branches and leaves of a laurel tree, laurel wreaths were used in ancient Greece and Rome to crown heroes and victors, and served as a symbol of superlative status. The title of Poet Laureate is derived from this custom of bestowing a crown of laurel leaves upon a renowned poet. In modern times, poets laureate are still present in many countries around the world, appointed by a government or institution to continue the noble tradition of writing, reciting, and handing down poetry to the next generation.

As part of our customs and traditions at Magnolia School, our Monarchs are invited to commit poems to memory and be able to recite them for the community accurately and with fitting stylistic flair. On Monarch Days, special attention is given to this tradition in the form of our Poet Laureate competition. Representatives from each house and grade level are chosen to compete and one champion per grade is crowned the Poet Laureate of her class, to reign until the following Monarch Day's competition.

Meet a New Member of the Magnolia Faculty

We are happy to share that Mrs. Lauren Cropper has joined the Magnolia Faculty as our new teacher for our 2nd grade Monarchs.

Lauren Cropper, originally from North Carolina, attended Baylor University where she earned a degree in Child and Family Studies. While at Baylor, Lauren met her husband Ryan and together they have four children, Thomas (10), Ellie (7), Mary Carter (5) and Jonathan (20 months). Prior to beginning her career as a teacher, Lauren worked at both Texas Children’s Hospital and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital as a Certified Child Life Specialist. After becoming a mother, she decided to make the transition to education. She loves teaching and working with children and is an advocate for encouraging independence. Her goal is to provide students with a loving, caring, safe, and structured environment in which they can learn not only academics, but social skills as well.

Welcome to Magnolia, Mrs. Cropper!
