THE MONARCH

November 29, 2019
Welcome Home, Monarchs!

Thanks to the many volunteers who came to help us this past Friday and Saturday, Magnolia School has arrived home!
When we return from our Thanksgiving break on Monday, 12/2, classes will convene at the Magnolia School campus.

As  part of our preparations for the move, we are also planning for our upcoming "House Sorting Day" in which all of the students, faculty, and staff will learn which house they have been placed in. The four houses of Magnolia School are Light, Thyme, Vine, and Heron. Each house has distinctive characteristics, a virtue particularly associated with it, and we are thrilled to annouce: their own individual house crest!

This week, we are pleased to unveil...The House of Heron!

Gratitude

The Great Blue Heron, both majestic and graceful, is a symbol of gratitude and auspicious favor, with references reaching far back into the literature and poetry of the ancients. Herons are closely associated with water, which is a fitting connection with Houston as a coastal city full of bayous. They have excellent night vision; even in the darkest of times, they are resilient and able to not only survive, but to thrive. Herons are often seen standing quite still, patiently observing and analyzing their surroundings. Their attentiveness to the natural world and ability to remain stalwart and calm are admirable qualities of this lovely creature.

Introducing a New Member of the Magnolia Team

We are happy to introduce Mrs. Gemma Scarpino, who is joining the Magnolia team to teach 7th grade religion, run the after-care program, and help out with extra projects around the school. Welcome to Magnolia, Mrs. Scarpino!

Gemma Scarpino is a recent graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville. Following her undergraduate studies in philosophy, Gemma spent a year teaching 7th grade literature and history at a charter school that emphasized teaching through the Socratic method and developing virtue through good habits. Mrs. Scarpino is also newly married and new to the Houston area; she and her husband moved in August so that he can attend the UT Houston dental program. She is looking forward to applying everything that she learned last year to her work at Magnolia, sharing her faith with her students, and having thoughtful conversations in the classroom.
Picnic Tables for Magnolia School
Charlie Nedwed, Eagle Scout and friend of Magnolia School, built four beautiful cedar picnic tables for the Magnolia community. We know our Monarchs will enjoy using these tables for many meals, games, and outdoor classes. Thank you, Charlie, and congratulations on earning your Eagle Scout Award!
