AIS-Salzburg Newsletter

Dear AIS-Salzburg Community,

The present health threat situation in Salzburg city, province and in Austria generally, has deteriorated to the point that the administration of the school has had to make an important decision regarding the continuation of in-class instruction and/or releasing our boarding students to their homes to continue instruction online. This is not an easy decision to make, but the conditions are such that it is imperative that we do so in an effort to protect the most important aspect of our educational mission; the health and well-being of everyone in our community.

Therefore, in recognition of the rapid increase of infection rates, we have decided to institute a two-week period of departures whereby in-class and online instruction will continue to be offered until November 13, 2020 after which all students will have departed for continued instruction online. More detail regarding this decision is provided at the end of this newsletter.

We thank you all for your patience and cooperation during this challenging times.

Video: Student Council Barbecue Fundraiser

AIS-Salzburg student council were rewarded for their hard work with 20°C weather on October 24th as they held a barbecue to raise funds for future student life projects. Students, teachers and resident staff all enjoyed a day of good food and fun in the sun together.

“I am really excited about the barbecue event. I believe it will be an amazing time grilling hot dogs and burgers for the students and watching them all uniting and playing games together. In my opinion, it is the best way to spend a Sunday,” said student body representative Ioannis S. just prior to the event.

Make sure to stick around to the end of the video for one of the more popular fundraising micro events that the student council organized, which was the soaking of Ms. Baehler (red shirt) with water balloons!!

Physical Education Nature Walk to Leopoldskron

This past Wednesday morning students went on a local nature walk as part of the Physical Education requirement and were treated to some of the beauty that is Salzburg in the autumn. The photos below are at the Leopoldskroner Weiher, a body of water off the foot of the Leopoldskron Palace, best-known as the original shooting location for the world-famous movie “The Sound of Music”. The location is a 20 minute walk from the school and is a popular hangout for students looking for a scenic backdrop for their photo shoots with friends.

Up-to-Date Corona Virus Information in Austria

Ampelsystem - ‘Traffic Light System’
Current Level in Salzburg: Red

As of 12:00 pm, October 30th, 2020
For the first time the city of Salzburg is at red with Corona numbers expected to continue to rise. In fact –as you can see in the map above– almost all of Austria is at red. As a result, the administration has made the difficult decision that it is time to send all students home to begin online instruction.

Only online instruction will be offered by the school from November 16th to December 18th, 2020 minimally. Upon evaluation of the health situation in late December/early January, the administration will then decide if students may return as of January 11th, 2021 to continue in-class education or if the period of period of online instruction is to be extended.

Due to the essentially untenable situation at present, between now and the new trimester end of November 13th, the school will be forced to put in place a near-total lockdown on our campus for those who remain awaiting departure.
