AIS-Salzburg Newsletter

Dear AIS-Salzburg Community,

In the midst of our second Summer Language Session, we are pleased with the situation and are given hope for a successful 'brick-and-mortar' school year starting September 7 when our dormitories open for arrivals.  However, no one should assume that we are not confronted with a very serious situation that calls on everyone in our community to cooperate and act appropriately throughout the length of this health crisis.  With outstanding staff members and mature, thoughtful students who demonstrate responsibility daily, the school year will proceed optimally, even if a worst-case scenario develops and we are forced to turn to online instruction again.  With great appreciation that we are located in Austria (where all schools will open this fall), that our location and environment allow us to keep tight controls on possible third-party infection and that our staff contributes the highest level of care on a daily basis, we look forward to an exciting school year.

We hope you enjoy this week's newsletter!

2020 Grads Accepted to Universities Across Europe and North America

Two months after graduating from AIS-Salzburg, 15 of our 17 graduates have reported back with their university acceptances while the two have decided to take a gap year. The following is a video slideshow report of the university plans of each of the 15 graduates.

Summer Language Program Session 2, Week 1 Review

As a result of some poor weather on the first few days of the second session of our 2020 Summer Language Program, some of the planned activities had to be rescheduled. However, we were able to make the most of it with some on-campus activities and a hike up the Kapuzinerberg in the Salzburg city center. The rest of the week involved a visit to the Stone Theater in Hellbrunn, a trip to the Mirabell Gardens, white-water rafting and summer sledding (Sommerrodeln) in the Alps.

Our Physical Education Program

The use of the Olympic training facility on the outskirts of Salzburg allows us to offer a comprehensive Physical Education (P.E.) program. This facility has an indoor pool, fitness studio, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, multiple indoor and outdoor basketball and volleyball courts, soccer fields—including one with artificial turf—indoor track and field facilities and much, much more.

Every trimester, the AIS-Salzburg student body is divided by grade level and enjoys a wealth of activities over the course of the term.  Every three or four weeks, instructors are rotated in order to provide students with their specialized experience and knowledge in the various PE disciplines.

"Being a small school provides us with the flexibility to easily tailor our program to the desires of our students or the specific strengths of our P.E. instructors. Each year, students are surveyed on their interests and wherever possible we adapt our P.E. curriculum to satisfy those interests," said Athletic Director David Burns in a recent teacher spotlight interview.

In order to keep the program dynamic and the students learning about all facets of their athletic abilities, different sports disciplines are offered each trimester in addition to the core lessons.

In the spring, we take the entire day off of school to hold our annual 'Sports Day', an event where the whole student body, administration, faculty and resident staff are divided into teams to participate in a day of sporting and fun events. It is one of the highlights of the year and a great way to celebrate the nice spring weather and a successful year together before final exams and summer departures.
It should be noted, that physical education —and any sports-related activities— would be one of the first things cancelled or postponed depending upon the virus situation here during the year.

For any questions or inquiries about our P.E. program please email our Athletic Director David Burns at
