Professor Joe Allen: Flagship Could Change
How Universities Think about Language Studies

The Chinese Flagship Program is a relatively young addition to the University of Minnesota. What is now a well developed, highly-competitive program was in its infancy 5 years ago in 2013, when Professor Joe Allen, then the head of the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures, applied to house the program at the University.

In 2000, Professor Allen came to the University of Minnesota to establish the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures (ALL), bring language programs up to contemporary standards, and make programs attractive to students. Through the efforts of Professor Allen and faculty and staff, ALL was shaped into the dynamic and innovative department of today, offering courses in the study of the languages, literatures, cultures, and media from West to South to East Asia.

In 2013, Professor Allen began the process of applying to establish the Flagship Program at the University. Not only was he confident in the quality of language instruction at ALL, he also believed that the Flagship program would be advantageous for the University as an “all-encompassing program for students.”

The Chinese Flagship Program’s (CFS) mission is becoming increasingly relevant as China becomes a major player in the global economy. According to Professor Allen, “The Flagship Program trains a variety of professionals to work in the world in a bilingual and bicultural way.” The program provides the structure and support for students to gain a deep understanding of Chinese language and culture, while completing a variety of degrees across majors and colleges.

Looking towards the future, Professor Allen hopes that CFS can continue moving beyond where the program started and gain a more international profile. He further stated that CFS could become something more than a means of training a small group of students and “change how universities think about language studies—that is, as a core rather than a peripheral subject.”

Interactive Grammar Instruction Videos
for Beginning Chinese Classes

Hai Liu and Wei-Hsuan Lo at CLA Language Center

Although many blended learning models exist for language learning, Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL), like Chinese, do not always have these technologies developed to the same extent. In these cases, foreign language instructors who wish to adopt blended learning must develop their own digital materials and teaching methods.

In order to implement technology in the Chinese classroom, ALL instructors Hai Liu and Wei-Hsuan Lo collaborated with Dan Soneson and Adolfo Carrillo Cabello from the CLA Language Center, and took the initiative to develop online grammar lessons for first-year Chinese courses. These lessons provide students with interactive videos that allow them to pause and answer comprehension questions throughout the lesson. The grammar patterns are taken from the dialogues in each lesson, and delivered through mini-lesson shorter than two minutes. After working through these online tutorials before class, students will be prepared to implement the grammar patterns during class.

“It's a way to ensure that students have at least thought about these things before class and it is not just sprung on them when the instructor gets there,” says Dan Sonneson. Through blended learning, students are more prepared to participate successfully and actively during class, which makes the learning process more beneficial for everyone.

The Chinese Idiom Project

ALL instructors Chi-ping Li, Hai Liu, and Wei-Hsuan Lo won one of CLA’s 2018 Academic Innovation Grant Awards for a project to rewrite 10 Chinese idiom stories at three levels---beginning, intermediate, and advanced, and to create an animation for each story. Each story is followed by reading comprehension questions to test the students. With this project, students at all levels can improve their speaking, listening, and reading ability in Chinese.

Rachel Aron Won 1st Place
at International Monetary Forum

Rachel Aron at Renmin University

Last summer, while studying abroad on the CET Beijing program, CFS student Rachel Aron had the opportunity to participate in an US-China relations economic forum speech competition at Renmin University. The purpose of the forum is for students to engage in discussion about economic conflicts and participate in cross-cultural sharing.

Preparing for the competition was not easy. Rachel had to research the US-China trade war as well as historical parallels to make inferences about the economic conflict. She drafted the speech in Mandarin with the help of her teacher, and stayed after class to practice her speech. Reflecting on the experience, Rachel stated, “I realized that I wasn’t alone and that I had friends to support me. So I could do things I never thought possible for myself. Since then, I don’t doubt myself in academics or my ability to do the things that I want to do.”
