Labour Day is as much about celebrating the achievements of workers as it is about recognizing the importance of labour unions. Everyday, unions fight for the right of workers to have a safe and healthy workplace, and to enjoy fair labour practices.
For CAPE, the year 2019 was a year of big wins that truly exemplified the significance and value of unionization.
Through dedicated work and perseverance, CAPE was able to secure a number of new agreements to improve working conditions and to increase work benefits for its members.
CAPE has successfully negotiated four collective agreements for members of the EC, TR, LoP and the PBO groups that provide for salary increases, new provisions for maternity and paternity leave, bereavement leave, leave without balance for family reasons and family leave, among others. In addition, special provisions for civilian members of the RCMP have been negotiated under the collective agreements of the EC and TR groups. CAPE was also able to reach an agreement regarding the harm caused by the Phoenix system to ensure that its members are compensated for any financial or mental hardship caused by the government's defective pay system.
Unionized employees put their trust in their labour unions to advocate and fight for them, a mandate that CAPE takes to heart.
Unionized employees also rely on a much broader community of volunteers that need to be celebrated and recognized. Their support is essential to give traction to the entire labour movement.
On Labour Day, we pause to recognize all the workers, volunteers and labour union representatives that are the foundation of the labour community.
