Giving Joy

Last week I said nothing gets me into the holiday mood like decorating. That's not wholly true. The season is really about giving. Nothing brings me greater joy than the smile on someone's face when they open a gift and it's exactly right.

Giving joy is the core of The Feeder community. By feeding ourselves and our loved ones in body, mind, and soul—with nourishing food, drinks, books, music, movies, and lots of love and laughter—we embody the giving spirit.

For this last issue of 2020, we've carefully curated a few holiday gift ideas. All of these are eco-responsible or help others. We've chosen to highlight Singapore organisations and small businesses, because we believe in supporting our local community. If you don't live in Singapore, please have a look in your area for small businesses or charitable organisations that might need a little more help in this unusual holiday season.

Cheers to you and your loved ones and to welcoming 2021 with a handful of positivity and joy.

Feed a Family

It may surprise you that in a country as wealthy as Singapore, hundreds of families are hungry.

Food from the Heart serves 44,600 people in Singapore who do not have consistent access to food, a basic necessity. Consider making a donation to cover operating costs and the essentials FFTH provides to their beneficiaries.

Willing Hearts operates a soup kitchen that prepares, cooks and distributes about 5,000 daily meals to over 40 locations island wide, 365 days a year. They need food prep volunteers and donations for supplies and operating costs.

What's more green than cycling? Fresh air, no fuel consumption (unless you count an energy bar)—great for you, great for the environment!

Started by avid cyclists Robin McAdoo and Heidi Sarna, Bike-A-Local offers 15 self-guided rides with intriguing titles like the "Three Quarries" and "Yip Yew Chong Mural" ride. Mapping wizard Robin has stitched together PCNs, backroads and bits of sidewalk to create the routes, while Heidi has added heritage nuggets—some, excerpts from her upcoming book Secret Singapore (Jonglez Publishing, March 2021). When you purchase a ride, you get a link to a “Google MyMaps Route” that you open on your phone, plus you'll get a link to written instructions. The routes are “geared” to different lengths and fitness levels.

Bike-A-Local Singapore offers The Feeder community a “Buy 1, Get 1 Free” for both individual and custom rides purchased online by 31 December 2020.

To redeem your “Buy 1, Get 1 Free,” pick the ride of your choice, pay for it, and in the message form, include “Feeder Promo” and the second ride of your choice.  You will receive links to both rides once the purchase is complete."

Empower Women & Girls

We first learned of United Women Singapore (UWS) through Leah Lambert at Stones that Rock, who has been a long-time supporter of the organisation. UWS creates opportunities through programmes and partnerships that help women and girls maximise their full potential and empower them to become future leaders. Working to build a pipeline of women leaders and influencers in Singapore, UWS aims to narrow the gender equality gap through education, raising awareness and advocacy on issues such as anti-violence and women’s empowerment. The organisation is looking for volunteers and donations for the flagship Girls2Pioneers STEM programme.
