An Upbeat Force Behind Community Education

For 14 years Tammy Sellars has coordinated Community Education of the Black Hills.  Classes, she says, “are short, sweet, and you can learn anything!”

A glance at her course catalogue confirms that.  These classes for adults range from duo dancing and glass blowing to outdoor adventure and wines.  Some classes meet just once or twice, and some more than that depending on the subject.  The lineup of courses is always evolving, with 20 or so new ones added annually.  Classes meet in Rapid City, Belle Fourche, Custer, Deadwood/Lead, Edgemont, Hill City, Hot Springs, Philip, Spearfish, Sturgis, and Wall.

Kinder Club Welcomes Children and Parents Alike

Starting kindergarten is a big step, not only for children but also their parents.

A new Kinder Club made the process easier for all.  Starting last April, the club was open to families whose children were set to enroll in nine Title I Rapid City elementary schools this fall.  Morgan VonHaden coordinates Kinder Club, a partnership of Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, Rapid City Area Schools, and Rapid City Public Libraries.  She believes that the club is especially important to single parents, giving them a chance to interact with other parents who are thinking about this new phase in their childrens’ lives.
