Volunteering Queensland News

Welcome to the August edition of the Volunteering Queensland newsletter.

In recent months Volunteering Queensland has embarked on developing a new strategic plan to lead us into the future.

The strategic plan will review the Vision, Mission and Values ensuring an alignment with sector needs, including those of volunteers, volunteer involving organisations and the communities they serve.

We will work closely with our stakeholders including our members, sector, key partners and all levels of government to align with our dramatically changing social and economic environment, and the unique characteristics, needs, impacts and aspirations of our giving and service focussed sector.

We will continue to keep our audiences updated on the development of this plan.

National Student Volunteer Week ran from the 9th of August to the 15th

NATIONAL STUDENT VOLUNTEER WEEK ROUNDUP

We would like to congratulate all the students across Australia for their incredible efforts during National Student Volunteer Week 2021, despite the obstacles of COVID-19 lockdowns.

National Student Volunteer Week 2021 was a great success with many students participating both in person and online.

During the week, Volunteering Queensland ran a National Student Roundtable involving students from all over the country. The discussion revolved around the experience of volunteering as a student, the challenges faced during COVID-19, how roles have been modified to accommodate lockdowns and remote learning and what the future of the week would look like. It was a deep and telling discussion that outlined students’ motivation to volunteer, however also painted the reality of the difficulty to do so in the last 17 months.

Coordinated and delivered nationally by Volunteering Queensland since 2013 and supported by Volunteering Australia and all state and territory peak volunteering bodies, National Student Volunteer Week 2021 (#NSVW21) acknowledges and celebrates student volunteers, and promotes volunteering to students and young people across Australia.

Inquiry into social isolation and loneliness in Queensland

QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT INQUIRY INTO SOCIAL ISOLATION AND LONELINESS IN QUEENSLAND

On 27 May 2021, the Legislative Assembly agreed to a motion that the Community Support and Services Committee inquire into and report on social isolation and loneliness in Queensland (the Inquiry).

The terms of reference for the Inquiry include several key components that are directly relevant to volunteering, its benefits for wellbeing and connection, efforts to enable volunteering across the state, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and known gaps in the state’s volunteering sector.

Volunteering Queensland is providing a submission to present information on the positive and enduring impact of volunteering on social isolation and loneliness, as well as the solutions it presents. Also, this submission seeks to represent and advocate for Queensland’s volunteers and volunteer-involving organisations, especially those that actively provide services that relate to wellbeing, social connection and inclusion, and mental health.
