June 2019 Newsletter

The weather is hot and the Co-op has plenty of ways to stay cool (the store has A/C 😉). We've been keeping busy, most recently taking the opportunity to join the community to celebrate Lumby Days!

We also have an exciting news about our first paid employee, as well as a big update to our online presence (can you guess what it is?).

Read on to learn about the Co-op's latest news!

What's New at the Co-op?

Anniversary Celebration & Member Potluck

The Co-op celebrated its 5th anniversary at the store, with a picture slideshow of our history, a delicious carrot cake from Okanagan Bake House and gluten-free/vegan cupcakes from Freedom Cupcakes by young Co-op member Brityn Cretelli. We also had Bubble Wonders do an amazing outdoor demonstration. (Pictured: Kristin Wills, Julie Jones blowing out the candles on the Anniversary Cake.)

The following day, about 25 people had a great time at the Member Appreciation Potluck. We played games, conversed, enjoyed great food, and soaked up the beautiful scenery at Timber Ridge Trails; thank you to Laverne and Darlene for hosting our potluck. Be sure to attend our next celebration in the Fall!

Thanks so much to our members, volunteers and everyone who has contributed to our Co-op's success! 5 years running—we are so proud of this accomplishment!

The Co-op's First Paid Employee!

The Co-op is estatic to announce that Sharon Greenwood is the FIRST paid employee as our Purchaser.

Sharon brings a wealth of experience from working in grocery stores; she has started a weekly sales flyer and brought in new and local (when possible) products that meet the Co-op's high standards. Learn more about Sharon's contributions below in her note.

The Purchaser position couldn't have gone to a better person! Congrats Sharon, and thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the Co-op. We're so lucky to have you!

A Note from Sharon 🍎

Hello everyone!
We're happy to see more BC/local produce becoming available. We, of course, support local first and love having fresh produce from our community. We are committed to providing quality produce at affordable prices, even if it means selling it almost at cost when the prices aren't affordable.
Prices have increased slightly due to increasing costs of: freight, bank charges, overhead expenses and wholesale products. However, I've compared our prices to competitors in Vernon to confirm that even after the increase, the majority of our prices are comparable, and in a lot of cases, cheaper. We are very proud of that!
There are plenty of new products at the Co-op, many based on your suggestions, so keep them coming! Our goal is to be your one-stop-shop so you don’t have to travel all the way to Vernon!
Lastly, thank you all for your kind words of encouragement on Facebook and to me personally at the store! They're very much appreciated! I am honoured to be the first paid employee at the Co-op!

Lumby Days

We were at Lumby Days! A HUGE thank you to all our amazing volunteers who helped out and hosted our table at the tradeshow: Maureen Ziemer, Chris Bauman, Nick Hodge, JoAnne and Paul Fisher, Anton Callaway, Julia Greenwood and Barb Crebo.
Thanks to everyone who checked out our booth and entered the draw.

Over 100 people entered the draw and the winner was Sheryl LaPorte.
The Co-op also attended the parade! Patrick drove a fuel-effecient car, Gracie and Chris Bauman handed out ginger chew candies, and Rainne MacFarlane and Zander Hannah-Atkins helped carry the Co-op sign. Geoff Atkins-Hannah of Bubble Wonders again was a wonderful presence drawing the spectators to us with his bubbles. Thank you to all the volunteers for helping raise awareness of the Co-op.

New Website & Video

Our new website is live thanks to many, many hours of hard work by Ashley Meriam. Please click the image to view the website. If you have any suggestions or feedback, we'd love to hear from you!
Ashley also created a 30-second video to raise awareness and introduce more people to the Co-op. Please take a look and share, we appreciate your support!
Ashley creates the Newsletter using MailChimp, and would love to teach others how to do this. It's fun, easy and a great skill to cultivate. Contact us to learn more!

Upcoming Events

Next Board Meeting

Wednesday June 19th at 6:00pm
1882 Grandview Avenue, Lumby BC

Volunteer Highlight: Chris Bauman

10,000 hours of volunteer work goes into keeping the Co-op running. We're always looking for more help. Contact us to see what you could do!

Meet Chris Bauman, our amazing president of the board. Chris does so much at the Co-op. She's been a Co-op member and volunteer since 2015 and a board member since 2016. She has been on several boards in the past and is particularly passionate about this one as the Co-op and what it stands for is very much in alignment with her own values.

She loves to work with people, is goal-oriented but has learned the power of process and the camaraderie that can result from people pulling together with egolessness, commitment, and enthusiasm.

Thank you, Chris, for all your contributions and positive energy

Vendor Highlight: Corner Mountain Soap

Meet Judi Bechard of Corner Mountain Soap. Judi lives in Lumby and has been soaping for over 30 years. She started making her own soaps because her son was allergic to store-bought soaps, so she took matters in her own hands. Judi’s passion is teaching others how to make soap.

Corner Mountain Soap strives to use compostable packaging when possible. All soaps are paraben- and aluminum-free, and are sustainably made. Their soaps are named after odd and whimsical stories surrounding the wilds of BC.
Come on into the Co-op and check out the soaps and their names. Perhaps you will find a story that speaks to you.
