There’s nothing like having a place to call home–a warm and welcoming place of belonging. SHC volunteers and supporters work every day to help newcomers build a sense of home in their new country.

In December, our volunteers knocked on more than one hundred doors to deliver fresh home-baked cookies to families in our region. This year marks the third year we have delivered cookies to students and families we work with. It's always so much fun to see the looks of surprise, recognition and smiles when students open their doors!

Last week, we enjoyed a wonderful benefit concert hosted by Westmoreland Church. We were touched to share this joyful celebration with friends who open their homes and hearts to refugees and immigrants.

As we look forward to welcoming students back for the next session of classes in 2020, please note the dates for upcoming events below.

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy holiday season,

Merritt, Kate and Yasmina

Annual Cookie Extravaganza!

The welcoming aroma of home-baked cookies is serious business at SHC and many of our volunteers are amazing bakers! Thank you to everyone who participated!

Toolkits for English Tutors!

Thanks to a generous grant from a private foundation, SHC tutors are now equipped with handy toolkits for English home tutoring. The kits come with essentials for teaching English to a newcomer. They include an Oxford Picture Dictionary, Flashcards, a Whiteboard, and a Weekly Planner to track lesson content.

Making Spirits Bright!

We gathered at Westmoreland Church this month for a superb musical performance delivered by the Westmoreland Festival Chorus and Washington Conservatory of Music. SHC is so appreciative to the community at Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ for hosting this event as a benefit for Solutions in Hometown Connections. Over the past three years, the Church has welcomed and sponsored several newcomer families from the Middle East and Central America.
