Happy holidays to our patients, family, and friends.  Once again, the holiday-crazy-time is upon us. As a reminder during this holiday season, It is important to remember we are still in the COVID-19 Pandemic. The COVID-19 Pandemic has been stressful for us all.  The holidays allow reconnecting with our family and friends.  We ask that you consider how to change your holiday plans to reduce the spread of COVID-19.  Here are some ways you can modify your traditional holiday plans as you prepare gift-giving, hosting, traveling, and relaxing:
  • Consider small gatherings of family and friends.
  • Host outdoor rather than indoor gatherings as much as possible. Even outdoors, require guests to wear masks when not eating or drinking.
  • Avoid holding gatherings in crowded, poorly ventilated spaces with persons who are not in your household.
  • Continue to follow social distancing rules by staying at least 6 feet apart.
  • Wear a mask.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.  If soap and water is not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. 
  • Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces.
Do not participate in any in-person gatherings if you or anyone in your household:
  • Has been diagnosed with COVID-19
  • Has symptoms of COVID-19
  • Is Waiting for COVID-19 results
  • May have been exposed to someone with COVID-19  in the last 14 days
If you decide to travel:
  • Always wear a mask in public settings
  • Avoid close contact by staying at least 6 feet apart from others.
  • Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid contact with anyone who is sick.
  • Avoid touching your face mask, eyes, nose, and mouth. 
We know that the holidays are a time for families to gather together, but your celebrations may need to look a little different this year.  Please remember that pre-event testing can provide a false sense of security as the test only says that you do not have detectable COVID-19 virus at the time of the test.

Always On-Call!

If your child is sick or injured or struggling emotionally, pick up the phone and call your pediatrician.  We are working hard to make sure we can care for your child while still keeping everyone safe during the holidays. If you feel you need to call 911, trust your instincts and call.  Otherwise, it's generally a good idea to check in with your pediatrician first. In most cases, we can help over the phone or coordinate other kinds of care for your child without going to the hospital.

Remember, there's always a pediatrician on call.  If you have questions after hours, or, if your child is experiencing an illness or injury requiring an immediate attention,  you may call 404-351-6662. You will speak with an experienced pediatric nurse from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. The nurse will answer your questions and address your concerns or you may request to speak with the on-call pediatrician.  We are here for you!

The Holidays are just around the corner, and if you’re in the same boat, there is no shortage of treats around the home. These no bake gingerbread bites taste like a gingerbread cookie, but they have far fewer grams added sugar than their holiday cookie counterpart. They also pack in fiber, vitamins and minerals, coming from the oats, nuts, and fruit that will fill up little (and big) tummies longer than cookies. Sweet and nutritious? I’m here for it! Do you think Santa will like these? 

 

No Bake Gingerbread Energy Bites

Makes 24 bites

Total time: 15 minutes 

 

  •                                 2 cups almonds
  •                                 1/3 cup pecans
  •                                 1/4 cup rolled oats
  •                                 1/4 cup gingerbread cookies or snaps  
  •                                 1 cup pitted dates (about 16 whole) 
  •                                 1/8 cup molasses (or use half honey, half brown sugar if no molasses)
  •                                 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 
  •                                 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  •                                 Pinch of ground cloves (spice) 
  •                                 Pinch of salt 
  1. Add the nuts, dates, oats, and cookies to the food processor and process for 3-5 minutes until the mixture starts to clump together. 
  2. Add the molasses and spices and blend for one or two more minutes until ingredients look evenly distributed. 
  3. Using your hands, roll the mixture into desired “bite” sized balls, such as a ping pong ball for reference. Store in the refrigerator and enjoy up to a week or freeze for later. 
  4. Optional; Add red and green sprinkles to make more festive!

The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology shares the most common hidden holiday allergies you should be aware of:

Candles and Fires.  Scented candles can quickly trigger allergy and asthma symptoms including headaches, watery eyes, and aggravated noses.  Wood burning fireplaces are also a trigger due to the smoke.

Trees and Wreaths. Fresh fir trees and wreaths are common during the holiday season.  Some people may have contact skin allergies to the sap of trees.  Some live trees still have mold spores and pollen on them, which can cause nasal allergies to flare.  Take the time to rinse off live trees before you bring them in.  If you have artificial trees and decorations that you use every year, clean them to remove dust and potential mold.

If you are attending a party or traveling to see family and friends, remember to pack your allergy medicine just in case you start to feel symptoms from triggers. Many triggers are invisible, so even a home that appears clean can cause that dreaded runny nose, sneezing and itchy eyes.

Breastfeeding During the Holidays? 

As a new mom, you may have more errands to run, parties to host, celebrations to attend, and traveling to visit family and friends. Traditionally. you have a seasonal to-do-list you must take on. These activities may have an impact on your daily breastfeeding routines.  For example, your baby may nap longer while traveling, and sleep less at night. Family and friends are eager to hold and give bottles to your little one, leading to fewer opportunities to breastfeed.  Here are a few tips to help keep a healthy mommy and baby breastfeeding routine during the holidays:

Rest. Mothers should recognize you cannot do everything.  Breastfeeding with your new baby is a great reason to kick back, relax and limit activities. Know where you can be flexible and where you're not.
Plan extra time for travel.  While planning to travel, factor in time for breaks for breastfeeding, rest, and nutrition. Build in special family time for you and your baby. 
Good Nutrition.  Holiday treats can lead to snacking on empty calories. Mom will feel her best if she has balanced meals daily.

LATEST FAQS ABOUT COVID-19 VIRUS


Does the office perform testing for COVID-19? 
Yes, our office is able to perform both PCR and Rapid Antigen testing for the COVID-19 virus.  At your child’s visit, the provider will determine if testing is indicated and if so, which type of test.
Our PCR test is a nasopharyngeal swab that is sent to an outside lab.  Results will take 3-4 days.  A PCR test is the “gold standard” for determining if your child has COVID-19.

The Rapid Antigen test is a nasal swab.  This test should be performed only on children with symptoms of COVID-19 virus, and within 5 days of the start of symptoms.  The Rapid Antigen test can only detect COVID-19 if there a lot of viral particles in your child’s nose; the amount of viral particles decreases after 5 days.  So again, this test is for symptomatic patients who have been ill for 5 days or less.  If the Rapid Antigen test result is negative, then a send-out PCR test may be performed on your child.
Please be aware that we have a very limited number of Rapid Antigen tests in the office.  We can not guarantee that your child will be able to be tested with a Rapid Antigen test, and our staff can not schedule your child for a Rapid Antigen test.  The doctors and nurse practitioners will decide on the most appropriate testing for your child after obtaining a history and physical at the office visit.

What are the new quarantine guidelines after exposure to COVID-19?
Recently, the CDC revised the quarantine guidelines if exposed to COVID-19 but do NOT have any symptoms.  The recommended time period for quarantine is still 14 days from the last time you were in close contact with someone with COVID-19.  But you may be able to leave quarantine sooner if you do not have any symptoms.
If you get tested for COVID-19 after at least 5 full days of quarantine, the test result is negative, and you do not have any symptoms, you may discontinue quarantine after 7 full days.

If you do not get tested for COVID-19 and do not have any symptoms, you may discontinue quarantine after 10 full days.
HOWEVER, it is important to continue to monitor your health closely for the full 14 days, wear a mask at all times outside the home, practice social distancing, and avoid crowds.  It is recommended that your child limit his activities outside the home for the full 14 days (for example, no playdates or extracurricular activities).

Is Piedmont Pediatrics going to have the COVID-19 vaccine?
The short answer is not yet.  The vaccines have not been tested in children yet.  We have informed the Georgia Department of Public Health of our intent to vaccinate our patients with the vaccine once it is approved for children and is available to them.  We do not anticipate that this will occur this winter.  We will keep you posted as we learn more.

Can a child get influenza and COVID-19 infections at the same time?
Yes, it is possible to have COVID-19 infection as well as influenza, RSV, and other respiratory viruses at the same time.  So, it continues to be VERY important for all of our patients to receive a FLU VACCINE.  We still have flu vaccine available for our patients.  Click here to sign up for a flu vaccine clinic time through our website.
