As you know, it is recommended that all children over 6 months of age receive a flu vaccine annually.  If your child is less than 9 years of age AND has not received a flu vaccine in the past or has only received one dose in the past, he needs to receive TWO doses this season, at least one month apart.

Because of COVID-19, our flu vaccine clinics will be run a little differently this year, so please make sure to read all the details below.  Please be patient as we adjust the flow of our usual vaccine clinics to accommodate the need for social distancing.  As a reminder, your child and family should not come to the clinic if you have been exposed to COVID-19 within the past 14 days.

If your child is in the office for a scheduled visit during regular hours, it is likely that he can receive the flu vaccine then.  For all other patients, you MUST sign up each child for a flu vaccine clinic through our websitePlease make sure to come to the clinic at the specific time you signed up for as we are limiting the number of patients at clinic at any time.  And please note that you must sign up by NOON the week-day before your requested clinic day.

We will have Saturday “drive-through” flu vaccine clinics on Saturdays from 11 AM – 3 PM, starting on September 12th and running until October 24th. These Saturday clinics will be in the parking area located behind the building at 2001 Peachtree Road (next to the Piedmont Fitness Center and across the street from the main hospital).  When you sign up for these days, you will sign up for a 15-minute block of time; again, please come to your scheduled time only. Also, please make sure you specify on the website sign-up if your child receives the Shot or Mist, as their vaccine screening questions differ.

We also have reserved the following additional vaccine clinic times for our patients UNDER three years of age, starting September 14th:  Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 am – 11 am – This clinic is also reserved for any patient who is getting their first Flu Shot EVER.  These clinics will take place in our Allergy clinic space on our floor (Suite 4030).

And yes, we do have a limited supply of Flumist this year.  The CDC and AAP recommend that EITHER shot or mist be given to eligible patients this season, and do not prefer one over the other.  Flumist can be given only to children over 2 years of age without other chronic health problems, including asthma, wheezing within the past 12 months, cochlear implants, or immunosuppression.  Flumist is a live virus vaccine, so can not be given if your child has received either MMR or Varivax vaccine within the past 4 weeks or has received Tamiflu or Xofluza in the past 48 hours.

Both Flu shots and Flumist can be given to children with an egg allergy.  However, if your child has had an allergic reaction to eggs that involved more than hives, please talk to your child’s doctor before signing up for the flu clinic, as your doctor may want to schedule the vaccine during regular office hours.  Please also note that we use multi-dose vials for our injectable flu shots; these vials contain a trace amount of thimerosal.  Our doctors do not believe there is any harm in this and recommend it without hesitation.  Piedmont Pediatrics will not call in flu vaccines to pharmacies for our patients, as we can not know if the pharmacy staff is equipped and trained to care for any adverse reactions that may occur.

Please keep an eye on our website and social media as we will post any updates there.  And let’s all make sure to get our flu vaccine this year!
