To our ACPA CSJE Community,

On March 31st, Dr. TJ Tourian (@tjjourian) tagged CSJE, ACPA, its other entities, and other student affairs/higher education associations on Twitter to encourage us to write a statement supporting trans youth and calling our members to take action.

We gladly accept this request to stand with our trans peers, friends, and family.

The ACLU has documented that 28 states have proposed over 60 bills that target the trans community. These bills often focus on excluding trans girls and women from participating in sports programs and restricting trans youths’ access to gender-affirming health care and more.

Dr. Harper Keenan, Dr. Z Nicolazzo, and Dr. Kevin Kumashiro have authored a letter, made available on Google Forms, that outlines in great detail the problematic nature of these coordinated efforts against trans youth. This letter calls on the Biden administration for action and intervention. Additionally, the authors ask educators, educational institutions, and their leadership to support trans youth by endorsing the letter. As of March 31, 2021, nearly 14,000 have already done so.

We advise our community to sign with us.

As an organization whose core mission is to advance liberatory, anti-oppressive, and critical pedagogical practices and to advocate for social transformation in higher education, we need to participate in active efforts to dismantle cissexism. We are grateful for this opportunity to be “called in” to further our colleagues’ work and to be given a chance to stand with them.

We also encourage you to consider how you can implement the suggestions made by the letter’s authors on your campuses. While our government has a role in shifting the landscape of support for trans youth in schools, we each play a part in how our trans students experience our respective campuses.

Regardless of our location, this news impacts all trans people. Instagram accounts from non-profit organizations like @TransLawCenter and @ACLU_NationWide have detailed some of this legislation. Other Instagram accounts like @SylviaRiveraLawProject, @TransgenderDistrict, @ForTheGworls, and @Emergency_Release_Fund have been working to celebrate trans lives and ensure trans futures.

Lastly, we remind our trans peers, family, and friends that we love you and will continue to fight for you. You are everything, and we offer wishes of comfort and love.

If this news has impacted you or someone you know, please call the Trans Life Line, a peer support and crisis hotline for Trans people in English and Español: 877-565-8860 (United States), 877-330-6366 (Canada).

In Love and Solidarity,
