CCL is stretching!
Dear ,

If you've been with Citizens' Climate Lobby for any amount of time, you know we focus on the carbon fee and dividend solution. Scientists and economists say it can by itself lower emissions throughout the economy, quickly and cheaply, while supporting everyone during the transition, especially those who need it most. Its border carbon adjustment even encourages worldwide adoption of similar policies!

Focus is one of our core values, instilled in us by our founder Marshall Saunders. (Listen to a funny and personal show about him and our 1st ED, Mark Reynolds on CCL Radio segment #73.)

So when Madeline Para, CCL's Executive Director, announced 2 additional policy initiatives at the June conference opening session, you could feel the collective body of CCL stretch!

After a year or more of research on effectiveness, bipartisan appeal, and equity, CCL has chosen to focus our volunteer might to
  • accelerate the transition to the clean energy economy and
  • support 'natural climate solutions', starting with trees and forests

Staff guidance on these policy areas will be developing over time, but we can start our learning path with this 'Trees and Forests as Natural Climate Solutions' training on the CCL Community website.

Passing bipartisan federal climate legislation is even more important, given the recent Supreme Court decision limiting the ability of the EPA to regulate GHG emissions. (See the CCL statement HERE) But it will be good to be able to work more collaboratively on the state and local levels, too, with these new initiatives.

Check out the many compelling sessions recorded at the CCL June Conference to help us work in this partisan era, including Amanda Ripley and Nwandi Lawson's keynote on why to leave humiliation and shame out of the conflict equation. They answer additional questions from their talk here.

Respectfully,
Kristen and Robin
Take Action
CCL is Your Headquarters for Climate Action!
As election season picks up steam, one of our goals is to make sure Congress takes action on climate so that we can reach the science-based target of reducing our emissions 50% below 2005 levels by 2030.  We also want to encourage candidates to generally support strong bipartisan national climate legislation.  See our top actions below!
Get Out The Environmental Vote
Helping EVP helps to strengthen our democracy

Nathaniel Stinnett (this month's CCL guest speaker) and the Environmental Voter Project (EVP) need lots more people to phonebank to increase the turnout of eight million unlikely-to-vote environmentalists. Our democracy is stronger when more people vote, and democracy is our solution to climate change. Help CCL reach its summer goal of 400 election season activities by phone banking from anywhere in the country into EVP’s 17 key states and logging your action in the Action Tracker under Grassroots Outreach!

Anyone in your chapter who has worked with EVP can tell you that EVP’s scripts and tools make it a breeze - the goal of your call will be to make it easy for people to vote by sharing how voting works in their state. This two minute video will give you more background and inspiration.

CCL Montana will be joining the Environmental Voter Project phone banks on July 21st! You can also register to call anytime at CCLUSA.org/evp!  Register by clicking the buttons below. We hope to "see" you there!

For information on EVP and additional voter outreach opportunities, go to this CCL Training page.

Learn How to Leverage Your Candidate Question
Prepare: Know What Question to Ask
Candidate town halls are an opportunity, not only to get our candidates to think about what climate policies they would support, but it also affords the opportunity to get your fellow citizens feeling comfortable talking and asking about climate change solutions in public.

A well-formulated question can do both. And, to have the best impact, questions should be tailored to the audience to be more impactful.

Take CCL's insightful training on this topic. Then, step up to the microphone at the next town hall and ask a question!

Finding Town Halls, Learning About Candidates
Included in the "Attending Town Halls" training (button below) is a section on how to find them.

CCL Montana could use some help finding upcoming public candidate events so we may notify our chapters. We also would like to learn more about each candidate's position on climate-related issues. Are you interested in helping us?  Please contact Kristen at  Bozeman@citizensclimatelobby.org. Thank you!
TRAINING: Attending Town Halls and Candidate Forums
Check Your Voter Registration
We know you have good intentions on voting! This is just a friendly reminder to check now on your voter registration so you'll have plenty of time to make any corrections before the election.  Thanks for being a consistent voter!

Montana June Lobby Days a Success
On October 6, 2007 Marshall Saunders founded Citizens’ Climate Lobby and Citizens’ Climate Education to “empower individuals to have breakthroughs in exercising their personal and political power by gaining the necessary tools to engage in effective grassroots advocacy” ...and “take action on climate change ….in an organized and effective way.”

We believe in democracy and exercise our right to be engaged citizens, asking Congress to represent us and enact policies to stabilize the climate. Respectfully and politely lobbying our Members of Congress (MOCs for short!) is part of our DNA.

Here are comments from some of the 15 Montana CCL volunteers who lobbied the D.C. offices via zoom this June!
  • "I lobby to make sure my voice is heard and understood by my members of Congress."
  • “I don't want to just talk the talk anymore.  I want to walk the walk and be a part of the change!! Together we can help heal our planet. Please vote for a carbon tax!”
We sincerely appreciate that the MOCs are performing a service to our country. We come prepared and ask questions, find common ground, and provide resources. We advocate carbon pricing and the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. We’re welcomed by our MOCs and we’re having a positive impact.
  • “I highly enjoyed lobbying because our liaison is super organized, we did great practice sessions, and she made it so easy to participate and feel comfortable.”
  • “We each had roles, like note taker, or the person who made the ASK. It was so well organized. I felt prepared and learned a lot.”
Montanans from all walks of life and all political persuasions lobby with CCL! If you want to lobby, let your chapter leaders know or email Kristen at Bozeman@citizensclimatelobby.org. In-district virtual meetings are being planned now and also virtual meetings in November with DC offices. To get started, please see https://citizensclimatelobby.org/blog/advocacy/practice-effective-climate-lobbying-with-a-meeting-demonstration/.
  • I lobby “Because climate action isn't just compatible with my Christian faith, it's required and because I want to be accountable to my children.”

Montana Endorsement Team
Next meeting: July 19th at 2pm.
Montana Endorsement Team page.
This statewide group seeks endorsements for effective climate action from Montana businesses, prominent individuals, and organizations. We have obtained 16 endorsements year-to-date and are on track to achieve our goal of 24 by the end of the year. Help us brainstorm community leaders that we may know, so they can contact the White House about budget reconciliation, using CCL’s on-line toolsJoin us! Montana Chambers Outreach Team
Next meeting: July 21st at 5pm.
The MT CCL Chamber Outreach team has been giving presentations to Chambers across Montana for the past year. Lately, we presented in Philipsburg and have been invited to present to a business organization in Billings (where we also presented to a policy committee for the Billings Chamber). We are asking Chambers to support the U.S. Chamber's position on climate change, namely, "Inaction is not an option". If anyone wants to connect with their local Chamber of Commerce and join the team, email Robin at FlatheadValley.mt@citizensclimatelobby.org You don't have to be a member of your local Chamber of Commerce to contact them.

Montana Social Media Team

Volunteers are sharing good news and lobbying our MOCs on social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit. Opportunities on all these platforms are available, and we can train you!
Also, CCL national has a Social Media toolkit that is updated weekly (usually on Thursdays) with direct links to CCL posts.  Simply click the link and Like/Share/Comment.  Details with step-by-step instructions are here: https://community.citizensclimate.org/resources/item/19/489

July Monthly Call and Policy Update
July 2022 Monthly Meeting w/ Nathaniel Stinnett, Environmental Voter Project Executive Director
Saturday July 9th, 11AM MDT

You may be surprised that not all environmentalists vote. In fact, as a group, they vote at far lower rates than most people. Information on how often constituents' vote is publicly available, and members of Congress prioritize the concerns of those who actually vote. This may explain why some politicians don't prioritize climate change. On this month's call, Nathaniel Stinnett from Environmental Voter Project will share how his organization is changing the voting behavior of people concerned about preserving a livable climate. The Founder and Executive Director of EVP, Stinnett is a frequent expert speaker on cutting-edge campaign techniques and the behavioral science behind getting people to vote. He has held a variety of senior leadership and campaign manager positions on U.S. Senate, congressional, state, and mayoral campaigns.

Policy Update

The Senate will return from the July 4th recess on July 11th. We will see whether it takes up the Reconciliation bill then. It's do or die time. The short story is that the Senate has a limited time to pass the extensive climate package, or parts of it, that passed the House last fall, using the Budget Reconciliation process which requires only 51 votes, not 60. Sen. Whitehouse gave CCLer's quite the pep talk at the June conference closing. Will Sen. Manchin come along? West Virginia CCLers are trying!
With the Supreme Court stymying the Executive Branch, we need legislative action more than ever.

ATMOSPHERE: Climate Emergency / Feedback Loops VIDEO

This 2021 series of short films on climate feedback loops (Introduction, Forests, Permafrost, Atmosphere, Albedo) was the Saturday night feature at the CCL June Conference. (Shows how nerdy we are!)
Our reviewers: It's depressing, short segments are good, complex, the temperate Forest discussion is not complex enough, and it mentioned only broad solution categories: policy, re-greening the earth, voting, no carbon cashback! Don't show it to your unbelieving uncle.

The 8 minute Atmosphere VIDEO, however, does a great job showing the connections between a warmer earth, air, ocean, and Arctic to extreme weather like flooding, fires, and drought.
