COVID-19 Update
June 19, 2020
You’ll see some changes to this newsletter starting today. Because activity surrounding COVID-19 at the state and federal level has slowed, you will receive a key statistics newsletter Monday, Wednesday and Friday, to allow you to continue to track COVID-19 by the numbers, and a more comprehensive newsletter Tuesday and Thursday.
IowaBio wants to provide our members useful information during the COVID-19 pandemic. This newsletter compiles information on state, federal and industry action to combat the virus and its impacts.

Iowa Update
Yesterday at her press Conference, Governor Reynolds touched on the economy. She said in Iowa unemployment claims dropped by 3,500, and are down from a high of 205,000 to under 155,000, indicating 50,000 Iowans are back to work, as businesses reopen after the COVID-19 shutdown.
The Governor announced a new Governor’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board to be the economic “tip of the spear” to assess the economic impact of COVID-19 and those whose livelihoods have been hit hard, and to look for opportunities and strategies for economic growth. The advisory board has an ambitious mission that will help set the foundation for the Governor’s legislative agenda for 2021, she said. The board will be chaired by Ben McLean, CEO of Ruan Transportation Management Systems and it will focus on modernizing Iowa’s economy as well as education, health care, workforce and quality of life.

Governor Reynolds announced that the Iowa caronavirus dashboard will have additional information about outcomes including recoveries and deaths. New data on deaths will including underlying/preexisting conditions. Nearly 70 percent of those who have died of COVID-19 in Iowa had a chronic health condition. The new information about deaths and recoveries is located here.
Three more Test Iowa clinic sites will open in Spirit Lake, Dubuque, and Atlantic. The full list of Test Iowa sites is here. Positivity rates have gone down from a high of 30 percent in mid to 10.3 percent. Over 240,000 have been tested. There’s a consistent downward trend in hospitalization rates since the high May 6, the Governor said. By today, a total of 21 long term care facilities with outbreaks will be removed from outbreak status, after 28 days with no cases.
The Governor’s last televised press conference was yesterday, she announced. They will continue to be livestreamed on her facebook page. She will hold one press conference per week going forward.

Currently, IDPH has reported on the state’s coronavirus dashboard,  24,959 Iowans have tested positive, up 320 from our update yesterday morning, with a total of 242,970 tested.  3 more deaths were reported since our update yesterday, bringing the total to 680 deaths. Now 15,658 Iowans have recovered. The latest on hospitalizations, including how many patients have been admitted in the last 24 hours can be found here.
