Prayer for Lighting the Advent Candle - Week 3, light three candles

O God, you sent messengers to tell us of the coming of the Messiah.  Help us to be messengers to the world about the light of Christ.  Amen.

Advent at Home:

1. Create your own “Journey to Bethlehem” in your home - Put up your Nativity Set if you have one. You can put the stable in a central place and have Mary and Joseph move closer to the stable as Christmas Eve gets closer.  They could arrive at the stable on Christmas Eve along with the Shepherds and Angels.  Baby Jesus arrives on Christmas Day and the Wise Men arrive 12 days later on Epiphany.

2. Sing along to Christmas music or watch a favorite Christmas movie/video together.  Favorites vary from house to house.

3. Give toys or food to organizations that support those in need - We continue to collect food for AFAC and partner with several organizations that provide support.

Advent Labyrinth
The labyrinth has long been a valuable Christian spiritual practice. Walker Chapel's Advent Labyrinth of white pine garlands is up and lit, with a sign directing visitors to our website for instructions on how to do the walk. You can also find them here. Please help spread the word on Nextdoor, Facebook, etc.  Send us your pictures when you check it out!

Special Offering--

Your generous donation to the Advent/Christmas special offering can help make up part of Walker Chapel’s benevolence fund shortfall this year, due to the Covid-19 cancellation of Aprilfest and Octoberfest. All funds from this offering go to support carefully selected local, national, and international benevolences (see serving the homeless, hungry, sick, and needy. Because these organizations have been so severely impacted by the pandemic, this year they especially need our full support.
Please mail a generous check to the church office marked “Advent/Easter Offering”, or donate on-line (visit the Walker Chapel website at and then select the  “Advent/Easter Offering” fund option.) Whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Simplified Structure virtual town hall
During this week's virtual town hall on the potential of applying Kay Kotan's simplified church leadership structure to improving Walker Chapel's missional effectiveness, our Lay Leader, James Wright presented this presentation (click here). Thank you to all those who participated, asked questions and provided valuable insights. If anyone would like a copy of Kotan's book there are additional copies in the church office.  We are happy to mail or hand deliver them, just reply to this message.

Staff Christmas Gift
Walker Chapel has a tradition of expressing special appreciation to our pastor and other ministry staff during the Christmas season. In this year of pandemic, staff members have had to pivot abruptly to new roles and new ways of performing ministry in safe and responsible ways. As ever, Walker Chapel is so grateful for their service and for keeping us connected. For those who would like to participate in this year's staff gift, the Pastor/ Staff-Parish Relations Committee suggests online donations at or gifts mailed to the church office (4102 N Glebe Road, Arlington 22207), marked for staff gift. Our congregation is so fortunate to have such an excellent staff, and we are thankful for their ministry throughout the year.
