The eMessenger
Friday 29 July 2022

1. Coming up on Sunday...
At the 10.30am service, Louise will be leading and preaching on 'Tested: Weakness and Temptation', exploring Hebrews 4:15–16 and Matthew 4:1–11. Join us in the building or by watching on Facebook Live - everyone's welcome. See the note below about Children's Church this summer.

At the 6.15pm service, Colin will be preaching on Paul & Timothy in the last in the 'Called & Encouraged' series. Please join us for worship, Word and prayer. Refreshments will be available from 6pm.

After this Sunday, there will be the usual summer break with no evening services in August. If you would like to host any social get-togethers on Sunday evenings instead, you are very welcome to send notices for the eMessenger to The evening service will be back on 4 September.

Thank you to Margaret Roberts for this Sunday's flowers.
2. Children's Church!
From Sunday 31 July and through August, Children's Church will be having a summer break. Supervised children will be very welcome to use the creche room, where boxes of activities and board games for older children will be available on the windowsill, as well as all the usual toys for younger children. Children are also very welcome to bring along their own activities and enjoy sitting in the service with their families.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to the small but wonderful team who have enabled Children's Church to return after the lockdowns then grow and flourish over the past school year. The children have had a brilliant time - thank you all!
3. Holiday Club Highlights!
Thank you to everyone who has prayed over this week, it's been great!
4. Join a Fellowship Group - All Welcome!
Fellowship Groups are a big part of how we share in discipleship, prayer and pastoral care together at West Kirby URC, many of our members meeting in fortnightly small groups for Bible study, social activities, prayer times and more.

There are currently six different groups running - each with its own flavour, but all sharing common values of welcome, Word, worship and witness - and potentially two new groups starting in the autumn. The groups meet on a variety of days, in various locations, so hopefully there is one that fits for you.

If you would be interested in joining a group, please contact Kath - 07930137041 /  Those who are newer to West Kirby URC would be especially welcome - you don't have to be a member yet, come along and get to know us better.
5. Safeguarding Training
Our Safeguarding Co-Ordinator, Sarah Jackson, writes,

"It is a URC requirement for all volunteers/staff in a role requiring a DBS to complete foundation level safeguarding training. Please look out for an email from our Safeguarding Coordinator Sarah Jackson, which will contain the link to the e-learning course, which can be done in your own time at home. The course is also available to anyone else in the church, who is interested in finding out more about safeguarding. If this is the case then please contact Sarah for further details".

Also, just a gentle reminder that if you have not yet sent Kath or Dan the names and email addresses of two people who could provide character references (to be filed alongside your DBS), that would be really appreciated ASAP.
6. Who are the Finance & Property Committee?
The Finance & Property Committee steward and care for the church building and finances, reporting quarterly to the Church Meeting. There have been some changes to the team in the past few months, so here are the current members:
  • Convenor - Ian Coleman
  • Secretary - Liz Matthews - welcome!
  • Treasurer - Jimmy Lindsay
  • Hall Bookings Secretary - Maxine Slade - welcome!
  • Health & Safety Officer - Wilf Mellors - welcome!
  • Eric Rose
  • Linda Wilson
  • Kath Hilborne
  • Ian Mills - welcome!
If you're new to West Kirby URC and would like to put names to faces, do ask a friend or member of the welcome team to introduce us when you're at church.
7. All-Age Afternoon Services this Autumn
Thank you to everyone who contributed ideas at June's Church Meeting about how to re-introduce and resource a 'Something New' style service for all the family one Sunday afternoon each month from this autumn onwards. There was strong support for 'Connecting your Community to Christ' this way, and the idea of 'skipping' one of the other services on the Sunday of an afternoon service was seen as a good approach to help this new service be well-supported and avoid our volunteer teams being over-stretched.

More information will follow but for now please note that there will be special afternoon services on the last Sunday of the month this autumn, and therefore no evening service on 25 September, no morning service on 30 October, no evening service on 27 November.
8. Remembering Anne Ryland-Jones
Susan Roberts writes to the church...

"I wanted to let you know that my mother, Anne Ryland-Jones, recently died.  She was the widow of the former minister at West Kirby URC, Malcolm Ryland-Jones, who died in 2019.
I am not sure how many of those who knew my parents are still members of the church (they ministered in West Kirby 1980-1999), but thought they would wish to know of my mother’s passing.  We haven’t yet arranged the funeral, but if anyone would like to know the date and venue, I would be happy to let you have those details when it has been arranged.
With thanks and kind regards

Susan can be contacted via Kath for funeral details etc.
9. Noticeboard...
Join us for Coffee, Cake & Communion on Thursday 4 August from 1.45pm in the church entrance lounge - all welcome.

Please could you help us out? Each summer after the young people go to camp, the tents are laid out in church to dry and folding them away again is a big job for one or two people to do on their own. This year, help would be especially appreciated. If you could help for an hour on the morning of Friday 12 August, please let Dan or Kath know. Thank you.

We are particularly short of people to serve on the sound desk, computer or behind the video camera (to stream online) at Sunday services. If you might consider learning any of these skills, please complete a serving postcard or contact Kath or Gordon - we would be delighted to hear from you!

We would also benefit from having a few more people on the car-park team - please let Tony Wilson know if you could help, or fill in a serving postcard. Thank you.

Many thanks for your financial gifts to support the life of the church, 'Connecting your Community to Christ'. Information about giving to West Kirby URC is available here.

Look out for the e-Messenger coming to your inbox towards the end of each week. If you have a notice to include, please send it to by 6pm Wednesday.
