1. Coming up on Sunday...
At the 10.30am service, Jane Gamble will be leading and preaching on the next in our series 'Tested: Faith in the Struggle', exploring idolatry and temptation in Deuteronomy 13. Join us in the building or by watching on Facebook Live - everyone's welcome - and Children's Church is on as usual.

At the 6.15pm service, it's week 3 of 'Encouraged & Called' and Karen Bowyer has prepared the next talk, this week it's Esther and Mordecai. Come along for worship, Word and prayer, there will be refreshments available from 6pm.

There will be evening services as usual on 24 July and 31 July, and then the usual summer break with no evening services in August. If you would like to host any social get-togethers on Sunday evenings instead, you are very welcome to send notices for the eMessenger to commsmanager@wkurc.org.uk. The evening service will be back on 4 September.

Thank you to Liz Wilson for this Sunday's flowers.
2. Churches Together in West Kirby
Picnic in the Park this Sunday, 12.30pm
3. Children's Church!
Children's Church will be on as usual this Sunday, then have a last session of games and fun on Sunday 24 July, before a summer break. From Sunday 31 July and through August, supervised children will be very welcome to use the creche room, where boxes of activities and board games for older children will be available on the windowsill, as well as all the usual toys for younger children. Children are also very welcome to bring along their own activities and enjoy sitting in the service with their families.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to the small but wonderful team who have enabled Children's Church to return after the lockdowns then grow and flourish over the past school year. The children have had a brilliant time - thank you all!
4. Holiday Club - Help with Props & Set Up
Set Up Days

We need lots of help to decorate the building on Thursday 21 July between 9am and 4pm - any time you can give would be really appreciated, pop in when you can. We'll also need help on Friday 22 July, hopefully just in the morning but that will depend on whether everything is finished...! There will be props and signs to paint, gazebos and bunting to be erected and more - come and join in the fun!

Help to pack down again after the last session of Holiday Club the following week would also be really appreciated from 12 noon on Friday 29 July.

Props help for Holiday Club please... Can you lend us...

- Gazebos 2m by 2m and smaller? 7 desired
- Kids sand spades and other tools?
- Children's sand trays? 3 desired - just the trays, not the sand
- Any sandy coloured cloth or carpet (just in case anyone has any lying around!)
- Anything else that might look good at a pretend archaeological dig?

Dropped off at church by Friday 22nd July please. Please email Liz Matthews bozzabeth@gmail.com for any more info or help to arrange getting things to church. Thank you.
5. All-Age Afternoon Services this Autumn
Thank you to everyone who contributed ideas at June's Church Meeting about how to re-introduce and resource a 'Something New' style service for all the family one Sunday afternoon each month from this autumn onwards. There was strong support for 'Connecting your Community to Christ' this way, and the idea of 'skipping' one of the other services on the Sunday of an afternoon service was seen as a good approach to help this new service be well-supported and avoid our volunteer teams being over-stretched.

More information will follow but for now please note that there will be special afternoon services on the last Sunday of the month this autumn, and therefore no evening service on 25 September, no morning service on 30 October, no evening service on 27 November.
6. Visit The Enterprise Market on Monday
Our neighbours at West Kirby School write, "Join us for our Summer Enterprise Market! Monday 18th July 10am - 12 noon. Pupil made crafts, gifts and games. Refreshments available. Open to families, friends and local community. Please share the invitation!"
7. New Flame Radio App
"Flame CCR, the Christian and Community Radio station for Wirral and beyond, broadcasts via the internet 24-hours a day, with a wide range of Christian and community programmes  including music, interviews and Bible teaching. If you've not tried us yet, why not give us a go? We are pleased to announce that at Flame Radio we have just made listening even easier by launching our new radio app on Play Store (for Android devices) and App Store (for Apple devices)."
8. Protecting you as you serve - references
As we've shared in previous eMessengers, alongside our fresh emphasis on serving, a new Volunteer Policy, mutual expectations paper and other documentation have been prepared and are available from Kath or Gordon for anyone who would like to read them. These documents help the church, as a charity, to comply with good practice and guide us in protecting one another.

One thing the church need to do going forward is to make sure that we have two brief character references on file for
  • Everyone who serves in a role that requires a DBS checkgenerally roles with children, young people or adults-at-risk.
  • Everyone who has been known to the church for less than 1 year and is serving in any voluntary role.
This is not so we can "check you out" but rather a compliment to be filed alongside your DBS to provide a record that you are a good and suitable person to serve with children, young people or adults-at-risk, or at West Kirby URC in general, especially if (and we hope never) a situation arose when that may be questioned. Keeping character references on file is all about protecting our wonderful team, as well as the church's work, now and in the future.

So - if you serve in a role that requires you to have a DBS, or you've been at West Kirby URC less than a year but already getting involved (thank you!!) you will have received an email from Dan (for youth and children's team) or Kath (for others) inviting you to send them back the email addresses of two people who could fill in a short form online for you. More details will be in the email, including a link to see the reference form for yourself if you wish.

Thank you for your understanding and support with this.
9. Noticeboard...
Gwyneth Brown, a long-standing member of West Kirby URC, died aged 94 on Easter morning of 2020, during the first lockdown. Her family are finally able to celebrate her life together with a Thanksgiving Service at West Kirby URC on Tuesday 19 July at 2pm. Everyone is warmly invited to attend.

Janet, our Caretaker, will be giving all the kitchens a deep clean and tidy-up this summer so please take home any items of your own that have been left behind there by the end of this Sunday. Thank you!

The team at the West Kirby Messenger magazine are looking for a new editor. If you might be interested in this voluntary role please email info@regional-media.co.uk for more information.

Many thanks for your financial gifts to support the life of the church, 'Connecting your Community to Christ'. Information about giving to West Kirby URC is available here.

Look out for the e-Messenger coming to your inbox towards the end of each week. If you have a notice to include, please send it to commsmanager@wkurc.org.uk by 6pm Wednesday.
