Gaelic Poetry Competition: Annual Margaret MacDonell Prize in Gaelic Poetry, 2023
The Department of Celtic Studies at St Francis Xavier University, in partnership with the Clan Donald Trust forthe Gaelic Performing Arts, is pleased to announce once again the annual Gaelic poetry competition named in honour of Sister Margaret MacDonell, CND. Sister MacDonell was born in Cape Breton where she was raised with Gaelic as her first language. She has a PhD in Celtic Languages and Literatures from Harvard University and is professor emerita, and formerly head, of Celtic Studies at St Francis Xavier University.
Please send submissions by email to the Chair of the Department of Celtic Studies at StFX, Dr Ranke de Vries rdevries@stfx.ca by the 1st of May 2023. The top three submissions will be selected anonymously byadjudication panel. As there is already a poetry contest sponsored by the Clan Donald Trust in Scotland (the Macdonald of Sleat Poetry Prize), this competition is intended primarily for people in North America. Only one submission per person will be accepted Previously unpublished poems only please.
Winners will be announced in May, Gaelic Month in Nova Scotia. First prize: $500; second prize: $250; third prize: $100. By submitting, authors agree to have their poems potentially published in a future collection of winning poems.

Say Yes to Gaelic
We are so excited to offer an introductory Gaelic course on the weekend of March 18-19th! Whether you're completely new to Gaelic or whether you know a few phrases, this course will be a perfect way to build a foundation in Gaelic speaking. All ages are welcome, so no matter your age, if you are interested in learning Gaelic then this is the course for you!
