September News

Welcome Back!
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new families and a "Welcome Back!" to those returning for another year.  We hope everyone had a wonderful summer!   The past week has been full of excitement and enthusiasm in preparation, and we are all looking forward to a great year!
Let me start by introducing myself!  My name is Shannon Curtaz, and I am the Director of Winnipeg Montessori School.  I have worked in the child care field for the past 23 years as both a front-line staff as well as a Director.  I am excited to meet and work with you all and your wonderful children!
I would also like to welcome back to school all of our amazing and hardworking, dedicated returning teaching staff:  Auryn, Christina, Deanna, Dorothy, Terry, and new to the role of teacher in the afternoons, Dilini!  Beth will also return as our Art Room Coordinator in the morning, and we welcome Christie as our afternoon Art Room Coordinator!  Rita and Jagpreet return as Inclusion Support Facilitators this year, and Dilini will fill a morning Inclusion Support position as well!  We have some new faces, so take a moment to say hi!

In the Program
During the weeks of September 9-27th we will enjoy a study  of "All About Me"!  The children will get to know each other by communicating about their favorite things.  Parents are asked to bring in one 4x6 family photo to assist the children in their study.  If it is easier, you are welcome to email photos to us at admin@winnipegmontessori.com and we can print them here for you!

Registration
There is always movement in our first month of school and spaces may become available.  If you are interested in adding to your current program, or if you have any friends or relatives who may be interested in enrolling, please have them check out our website at www.winnipegmontessori.com, email us at admin@winnipegmontessori.com, or call the school at 204-452-3315.

Parent Volunteers
Many parents are eager to volunteer their time in order to help with our program.  These are some ways in which we can use your help:
* Shopping for snacks and kitchen needs
* Handy-man services/ small repairs
If you are interested in helping in any of these ways, please speak to Shannon.

Parking Lot Safety
As many of you know, our parking lot can be quite congested - especially at arrival and pick up times!  Please remember to keep right upon entering and exiting, and to observe the NO PARKING signs adjacent to the gate.  Please ensure that you hold your child's hand while in the parking lot to ensure their safety.  Small children are not always visible to drivers entering and exiting the parking lot.  As a final note, please be aware that parking along the west side of the lot along the wooden railing is reserved for staff only.  We have staff members arriving at different times throughout the day, and it is difficult for them to get into the school for the start of their shift if the staff parking spaces are occupied by families dropping of or picking up their children.  Thank you very much for your understanding in this matter!

Playground Safety
Please note that it is the responsibility of each parent to supervise their own child and any siblings in the playground at drop off and pick up times.  Please remember to keep a close eye on your children near the swings.

Snack Program
This year we have a number of students in our school who have serious food allergies.  These can be life threatening allergies.  We want you to know how we are addressing this concern and how you can help.
- Snacks are provided by the school.  The snacks are carefully selected taking into account all information provided in the allergy/medical history section of the registration form.
- We ask that NO food items come to school other than the full-time children's lunch.  Additional snacks cannot be eaten at the school, and should remain in your vehicle, rather than stored in your child's backpack.
- The staff is aware of symptoms and allergic reactions to watch for and have been trained in procedures in case of an allergic reaction.
- A copy of the snack menu is posted in the locker room for those who would like further information.
- It is especially important that children wash their hands thoroughly with soap and warm water and brush their teeth before coming to school, particularly if they have had peanut butter or some nut item for breakfast or lunch.  The oils from the peanut butter, for instance, can easily be transferred from hands to items in the classroom, and this could pose a potential health hazard for some children.
If you have any comments or concerns regarding the snacks that are provided, please see Shannon.  Thank you for helping to ensure a safe school for our children.

Birthday Donations
We would like to thank everyone for offers of donations as part of your child's birthday celebration.  Due to allergy restrictions, we cannot accept food items, however we welcome donations of items or cash towards our program wish list!  Your donation will help keep our classrooms filled with updated materials for your child's learning.  Please see Shannon if you would like to know what items we are saving for!  All cash donations will receive a receipt for income tax purposes!

Birthday Party Invitations
During the school year we understand that you may want to invite some of your child's friends to a birthday party.  We are happy to assist you with a list of your child's friends and to provide contact information for children, (if we have permission to do so from the family). We are unable to hand out Birthday Party invitations at school.

  • Important note: There is absolutely no street parking near the school, so we have made extra parking available in the soccer complex parking lot for any special guests, events and presentations. Please use the entrance off of Willson Place, and avoid using the first two rows of parking closest to Waverley, as these are reserved for local businesses.
  • Please be sure to label all indoor and outdoor clothing and shoes, and to replace your child’s change of clothes when they are soiled, are no longer suitable for the season, or are too small.
  • Music and French Programs:  We would like to welcome Rachel MacEwan for another year as our Orff music instructor, and new for this year, Lauri Eagles, as our French Language instructor!  The French program will run weekly on Mondays, beginning Monday, October 7, 2019.  The music program will run weekly on Thursdays beginning on Thursday, October 3, 2019.

  • Full Day Option: The full day hours are from 8 am to 5:30 pm.  We ask that if you are not registered for the Full Day program, that you kindly wait with your child until 8:30am, unless you have made alternate arrangements with Shannon, to ensure that we are able to maintain proper staff to child ratios, as there are only enough staff scheduled to care for the number of Full Day children enrolled each day before 8:30am.

  • When school closure may be required due to inclement weather, parents are advised to call the school and watch their email for notification of a closure.
