June 2019
Michael & Caryn were on-the-go this month...

We never stopped moving since meeting with Governor Pritzker in Springfield. In the run-up to SelectUSA, we scheduled over 20 face-to-face meetings in Washington DC and completed printing the 2019 Deal Book.

Below is an extended recap of the SelectUSA conference.
We also met with a number of service professionals ranging from Kankakee to Racine and Michigan City to Whiteside County looking to learn more about collaborating
with SelectChicago®. We fielded calls from alliance partners in China, Poland, Netherlands and the Middle East. Furthermore, we also met with ITAGC and CITCA to discuss their participation in our SelectChicago FDI Conference on August 7th.

Community Spotlight

Whiteside County

Whiteside County “is a community of blue collars and green thumbs” located 1½ hours west of Chicago on Interstate 88.  With one foot in the Chicago Super Region and one foot in the Corn Belt, we can best describe the region as, “We Grow Things. We Make Things. We Move Things.”.  Illinois is the nation’s fifth largest agriculture producer and Whiteside has some of the State’s most productive farmland.  The region has all inputs and outputs for agribusiness from soil nutrients, to farm machinery and implements, to food processing.  As a manufacturing cluster, we are world famous for metal fabrication, heavy machinery and small electrical appliances. Our well-trained regional workforce of over 500,000 and our local schools feed our talented pipeline with customized training in manufacturing skills. Our Multicast Extended Internship Program, a collaboration between our businesses and community college, produces work-ready employees with the essential skills manufacturers deem necessary.  Our central U.S. location in the nation’s transportation hub means access to all major markets, domestic and international, through our superior road, rail, air and water transportation assets, and location on the Chicago-Denver iFiber Line provides high-speed digital connectivity. In fact, the region is home to the nation’s 112th-gigabit city with speeds from 10 gigabits available. The region’s low cost of living (COL Index 78) and doing business and our connectivity make the region perfect for business locations and expansions. We invite you to explore our region and its multitude of assets. We are certain you will understand why we look at the Whiteside / Northwest Illinois Region not as a place, but a solution.
SelectUSA Extended Recap

This month Caryn and Michael went to the SelectUSA Conference in Washington DC. This was Michael’s fourth year, Caryn’s second year, and SelectChicago’s fifth year attending the conference. We always stress the importance of consistency in showing up to events and the long sales cycle for international development. This year was a watershed event for SelectChicago®. In addition to the social connections with other EDO’s, Department of Commerce professionals and other honored guests – like the U.S. Ambassador to China, Terry Branstad - we met with over 85 international investors and our inbox is already exploding with follow-up requests.
In addition to the SelectUSA Conference itself, Michael also attended the CGCC 2019 Annual Business Survey Report Launch & CGCC SelectUSA Reception. This invitation-only event was standing room only. During this event, Michael was introduced to the new CGCC – Chicago Executive Director.
Now we begin the big push to SelectChicago®’s FDI Conference on August 7, 2019. If you have not registered – please do so soon. We are offering an early bird discount of $100 for those who register before July 7, 2019.
If you have been following us on Facebook or LinkedIn, Caryn’s SelectUSA wrap-up summaries have been great. For those who have missed it, here they are again:
Hello all! Greetings from DC!

Today Michael and I had a very productive first day at the conference. Besides attending sessions on EB5 and workforce development, we had appointments with a dozen potential investors and met at least another 30 potential investors at our booth from various countries including India, Canada, Iceland, Italy, Nigeria, China, Mexico, Czech Republic and Greece. We also met Trade Representatives from Germany, Italy and Qatar as well as numerous US Commerce Department representatives and interested potential program sponsors from law and accounting firms.

There seems to be a lot of interest in our August event, but even more importantly, a lot of interest in our Program and specifically in you, our communities.

The event seems very well attended this year, although it’s in a smaller venue than last year, so everything is very choppy and hard to maneuver. The flow between spaces is where we’re hearing the most complaints.

I’ll report in again tomorrow.

Greetings from your nation’s capital!

Day Two at SelectUSA proved to be just as busy as Day One. We had appointments with potential investors all day long and lots of activity at our booth. We are getting great feedback about our August event and we have signed up a few people. There is great excitement about our deal book too.

Today we met interested people from India, Israel, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Ireland, China, Estonia and Mexico.

Tomorrow is our last day here and we will do our best to continue to press for attendees at the conference and visitors to your communities.

We just wrapped up a very successful three days in DC. We have a lot of people interested in attending our August event, speaking at our event and bringing people to the event.
We met people from all around the globe who were very excited to hear about our Program. Also, we met with several Department of Commerce representatives and other government officials who were enticed by our Program.
Today we met with people representing Israel, Vietnam, Korea, Poland, Mexico, Greece, India and Romania.
Additionally, we met with Grant Thornton and EY as well as other professional firms. We are excited by the prospect of having their participation in our Program this year.
We attended sessions on Opportunity Zones on workforce development (with Wilbur Ross and Ivanka Trump).
Lastly, our hats continue to be a crowd pleaser!

As you can see there are a lot of people interested in working with us once they have “Select(ed)Chicago as a place they would like to land their business.
Lastly, we want to take time to thank our Community Partners, Corporate Sponsors and members both of CITCA and ITAGC for their support. We could not offer the SelectChicago Program without your support and encouragement.
