Due to the continued high percentage of positive COVID tests across South Carolina, Phase One guidelines for indoor, in-person worship have been extended through at least August 31.

Many congregations have submitted and received approval for outdoor worship with increased participation, while still following all Phase One guidelines for physical distancing, masks, and distribution of communion. With proper distancing and cleaning methods, attendance can be expanded based on the size of the outdoor area.

The Liturgy Task Force offers the following suggestions for outdoor worship:

  • -- At least six feet of separation between participants not from the same family at all times, including entrance and exit of the worship area, seating during worship, and communion.
  • -- If the congregation is singing, physical distancing of more than 10 feet is necessary.
  • -- Masks used by all, including the congregation and liturgical leadership.
  • -- Ushers and monitors on hand to help ensure proper spacing and mask use.
  • -- Special care should be paid to where and how people will enter and exit the worship area, to ensure that physical distancing is maintained.
  • -- Sanitation of any surfaces between services.

For congregations interested in expanding outdoor worship, a proposed plan must be submitted to Frank Ballard so that it can be reviewed by Bishop Waldo.
