AISI Announces 2019 Institute Medal Winners

On June 4 at the AISI Annual Meeting, AISI Chairman and AK Steel CEO Roger Newport presented the 2019 Institute Medal – AISI’s highest technical award – to Chad Cathcart, Hot Strip Quality Assurance Manager at Stelco, for the paper Clean Steel Assessment.  Mr. Cathcart’s paper was an “introduction to clean steel production and measurement, aimed primarily at the young metallurgist beginning their career but is also applicable to the non-metallurgist.”Established in 1927, the Institute Medal and two Finalist Medals are awarded for technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry.  Papers are judged on the potential value to future prosperity of the industry, technical excellence and originality, effective communication and breadth of interest to AISI members.  For more information, click here or contact Liz Vago.

AISI Welcomes Two New Directors to the Board
AISI’s Board of Directors welcomed two new directors – Michael McQuade, Algoma Steel Chief Executive Officer, and Ed Ramsey, Regional President - North America for Harsco Metals and Minerals – during the Annual Meeting on June 4.“Michael and Ed both have years of steel industry expertise that will serve as an asset to the Institute as we navigate this critical period in the history of our industry,” said AISI President and CEO Tom Gibson.  For more information, click here or contact Lisa Harrison.

AISI Lauds Commerce Department Announcement on Currency
On May 23, AISI President and CEO Tom Gibson praised the Commerce Department’s announcement of a proposed rule to establish new regulations governing the imposition of countervailing duties on imports from countries that act to undervalue their currency.  “We applaud today’s strong and forceful action by the Commerce Department to penalize those countries that engage in the unfair trade practice of manipulating the value of their currencies to benefit their own exporters – at the expense of U.S. manufacturers.”  AISI also filed comments on this proposed rule on June 27.  For more information, click here or contact Raphy Goodstein.

SMDI Announces Annual Award Winners for 2019
SMDI, a business unit of AISI, today presented three awards for achievement and service to the North American steel industry to Dr. Grant Thomas of AK Steel, Eric Petersen, formerly of AK Steel (retired); and, Edward Pleet of Ford Motor Company. The awards were presented by AISI Chairman Roger Newport, Chief Executive Officer at AK Steel Corporation, during the Institute’s General Meeting in Washington, DC.“These award winners exemplify the best attributes of a strong and growing automotive steel industry in North America,” said Newport. “Each of them has demonstrated the innovative success the entire industry can enjoy through industry-wide collaboration. Jonathan Humble Receives Awards from ASHRAE and NFPA
Jonathan Humble, FAIA, NCARB, LEED BD+C, Regional Director of Construction Codes and Standards for AISI, has been recognized with the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Committee Service Award.  Humble has been with AISI for more than two decades.The ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award recognizes members “who have served the Society faithfully and with distinction on committees or have otherwise given freely of their time and talent on behalf of the Society.”  Humble was presented with the award at the ASHRAE Annual Conference in Kansas City, MO on June 22.  For more information, click here or contact Debbie Bennett.
