Mary had saved perfume to anoint Jesus at a specific moment and time. What has God prepared for you this week?Today’s Image: Perfume
Take a minute or two to find some kind of perfume or essential oil you have in your home. Open it up and smell the aroma before starting this morning’s devotion. Keep in near you as you read and reflect on God's word.
READ: John 12:1-8
The perfume Mary anointed Jesus with was worth about a year’s wages, which is why Judas raised questions about how lavishly Mary used it. The custom of the day would be to anoint the head. Not only did Mary anoint Jesus’ feet, but she released her hair (again, against custom) and dried his feet with it. Such humbleness and love!
Jesus reprimands Judas for only thinking about money, and then points forward to the fact that he would be anointed in death. He makes it clear, whether his followers understood it or not, that he will not be with them much longer, emphasizing that God has a specific plan for the days to come.
This passage would have us reflect on the events that are to come this week. Many of us are thrown off by changes in schedules, isolated lives and personal suffering in our families and communities. Yet the Lord has prepared for us this week too. As we reflect more and more on Christ’s suffering, may we feel closer and nearer to him. He is with us at the empty dinner table. He is with us during the awkward video calls and the anxious swells of not knowing what is coming next. God knows and he’s there for you.
Place a few drops of perfume or oil on your wrist. When you smell it today, remember Mary’s act of worship. Remember that God has prepared you for this week, and He will face it with you.
PRAYER. Thank you for the example of Mary, Lord.
Teach us to love you with an extravagant love!
Help us to trust that your plans for us are good.
Prepare your people for the journey ahead. Amen
