Research Day Showcases Student Excellence in PBS
 
For the first time since the pandemic, the faculty and staff of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences hosted the department’s annual Research Day in person. The event featured research talks by various faculty, poster presentations by students, opportunities to network, and a formal awards program.
 
Students were the highlight of the event with their research posters, presentations, and honors.  Award winners included:

PBS Junior Student of the Year

  • Matthew Whittaker 

The daughter of the Dr. Joe LaRocca, Dr. Beth LaRocca-Pitts, participated in the award presentations.
 
Earlier in the day, two PBS alumni provided keynote messages. Dr. Vishal Gupta addressed "From UGA to Chief Scientific Officer: Reflections on a 22-Year Career Journey.”  Later in the day, Dr. Tanzir Mortuza discussed “From Toxicology to Regulatory Affairs.”
 
Held at the college rather than the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, the event shifted from spring to fall semester this academic year. According to Dr. Jason Zastre, PBS Interim Assistant Department Head for Graduate Education and the event coordinator, the format modifications allowed for more participation of students and faculty.  “We were pleased with the content of the program and the engagement of our faculty and students,” said Dr. Zastre.  “It was an outstanding Research Day.”

UGA College of Pharmacy White Coat Ceremony Ushers in Class of 2026
 
Members of the University of Georgia Doctor of Pharmacy Class of 2026 received their white coats during an official ceremony held Saturday, August 13 at the Performing Arts Center on the UGA campus. The 132 first-year PharmD students heard keynote remarks from Dr. Lori Dukes, assistant dean of the College’s Office of Experience Programs; Dr. Lori McGinley, a 2002 alumna, the Vice President of Pharmacy Management at PharmD on Demand in Watkinsville, and the current president of the College of Pharmacy’s Alumni Board; and Noah Gurr, a third-year PharmD student from Cumming, who serves as chair of the Dean’s Student Advisory Council, president of the National Community Pharmacists Association, president of the Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International, and parliamentarian of the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity.

PharmDawg Excellence at NPhA/SNPhA in Atlanta

The UGA CoP had a great showing at the recent NPhA/SNPhA Conference in Atlanta. The highlights are numerous, including:

  • Tierra Jackson officially assumed her role as National President of SNPhA and delivered an incredible presidential speech.
  • Elizabeth Echols was inducted as the National Remember the Ribbon Chair of SNPhA.
  • Parth Patel was inducted as the SNPhA Region 2 Facilitator.
  • Busola Fowowe '22 wrapped up as the outgoing National Recording Secretary of SNPhA.
  • Charles Ajala won the Dr. Kathy E. Monangai Book Award.
  • Kelly Bazel won first place in the National Kroger Clinical Skills Competition in Division 1.
  • Parth Patel and Stephen Wu won first place in the National Kroger Clinical Skills Competition in Division 2.
  • Drs. Deborah Elder and Vivia Hill-Silcott were awarded Regions 1 and 2 Advisor of the Year.
  • Dr. Brian Seagraves led a workshop on "The Care and Treatment of the Underserved Population Infected with Hepatitis C."
  • Drs. Sharmon Osae and Michelle McElhannon were among speakers for the NPhA Conference.
  • Dr. William Huang served as a judge for the clinical skills competition.

Dr. Sikora Publishes New Book

Dr. Andrea Sikora published a new book about mentorship in healthcare, titled Pay It Forward: A Map to Mentorship in Medicine. This book is "designed to be a warm welcome to the power of mentorship in a healthcare career. The goal is to provide a concise and informative overview of the best practices of mentorship and discusses everyday pearls and maxims. It features a novel adaptation of the five ethical principles of medicines and practical tips for integrating mentorship into the life of a healthcare professional. Ultimately, the hope of this book is to kindle the flame of what drives us as educators and healthcare professionals: paying it forward by helping our mentees and our patients."

Dr. Shane Pruitt Featured in UGA Columns

Shane Pruitt could be considered a modern-day Renaissance man. He knows how to fly a plane. He commands the stage with a song or a soliloquy. And, as the director of recruiting and undergraduate advising in the College of Pharmacy, he guides hundreds of students through their educational journey. PharmDawgs Finish in Top 3 of NCPA Business Plan Competition

Congratulations to PharmDawgs Stephen Ansel, Noah GurrMohit Kumar, Brooks Patterson, and Drew Smith for placing in the top three nationally of the 2022 Good Neighbor Pharmacy NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition!  Ashley Hannings and Matt Lastinger (SBDC) served as advisors. The team will move on to compete for the top prize during the live competition at the NCPA Annual Convention in Kansas City in October. Good luck, PharmDawgs!
